Laid-back life on the bluff

North Mankato is a town of 14,000, linked to Mankato by bridge over the Minnesota River. Primarily a bedroom community, the major draw here is accessibility and natural beauty. “You’re on a bluff, so there’s some beautiful scenery— the sunsets are amazing. Some of the properties have a view of the river as well,” says Candee Deichman, a Realtor with Century 21 Atwood Realty Inc. Deichman also mentions ease of travel with access to U.S. Route 14, which is necessary for most shopping and dining. The area also supports a highly rated school district and an array of parks.

Everything from modern New Traditionals to turn-of-the-century bungalows

The median home sale price is $320,000, about $100,000 below the national median. Townhouses are clustered in some of the newer subdivisions to the north, along with New Traditionals, built since 2000. Homes near downtown and in the city's southern half are older, from the early 1900s to the mid-20th century. Cottages, bungalows and ranch-style homes are among the most common types.

The most prominent industries include manufacturing and health care. Major area employers include the Mayo Clinic Health System and Taylor Corporation, a global print provider owned by Glen Taylor, a former member of the Minnesota State Senate. “The Taylor Corporation is what North Mankato is built around,” says Deichman.

Music in the Park and Blues on Belgrade

Wheeler Park hosts Music in the Park on Thursdays in July and September. Locals can lounge on lawn chairs, check out the food stands and listen to live music. “They do have some fun festivities that are well-attended,” says Deichman, adding the Fun Days parade and celebration follows the observance of Independence Day, featuring a carnival, food and shows. Blues on Belgrade follows later in July, near the river on the east end of Belgrade Avenue.

Dinning in the business district and shopping at the farmers' market

A cluster of chains and a handful of independent restaurants line Commerce Drive within the city’s business district. For most shopping, locals can head across the bridge to Mankato.

From June to October, the North Mankato Farmers' Market provides produce and baked goods a little closer to home.

Commutes out of the city

U.S. Route 14 bisects the city, while U.S. Route 169 borders the east, providing routes to neighboring Mankato to the south and Minneapolis 80 miles north. Cyclists can ride several bike lanes throughout downtown. The Mankato Transit System provides fixed-route service to the city and paratransit service seven days a week. The Mankato Clinic North Mankato is located within the city, while the Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport is about 78 miles northeast.

Crime and climate

Snow in North Mankato is common, but the city diverts public works staff from all departments to clearing its 540 lane-miles of main and secondary streets. July is the hottest month of a four-month warm season that begins tapering off into cool weather by mid-September.

According to FBI data, the rates of reported violent crime and property crime in North Mankato are lower than the Minnesota average and national average.
