How Northfield blends a central location with close-knit community

If you want a quiet village without feeling far removed from everything, Northfield fits the bill. Located about 19 miles south of Cleveland and roughly 21 miles north of Akron, it offers a relaxed, suburban lifestyle with easy access to everyday necessities, entertainment and outdoor recreation. Once part of Olde Northfield Township, the village is still closely tied to nearby Macedonia, Northfield Center and Sagamore Hills, making it easy to feel connected across communities without losing its small-town identity.

Housing styles, from midcentury builds to newer single‑family homes

As you explore Northfield neighborhoods, you’ll notice manicured lawns and sidewalks shaded by oak trees. Some streets have sidewalks, adding to the walkable, neighborhood feel. Most homes in Northfield were built between the 1950s and the 2020s. “There’s anything from condos and older homes to new construction,” says Theresa Walters, a Realtor with eXp Realty who has sold homes in the area since 1993.
Common architectural styles include:

  • Ranch-style homes with open floor plans
  • Split-levels with attached garages and vinyl siding
  • Colonial Revivals with classic, symmetrical facades
  • New Traditionals with more modern features
Single-family home prices range from the lower $200,000s to the $500,000s. If you prefer low-maintenance living, condos and townhouses are also available, and usually cost in the upper $100,000s and the $200,000s. Several condo developments, and even some single-family neighborhoods, have homeowners’ associations. Monthly HOA fees can exceed $300 in some newer or amenity-heavy communities.

Homes often feature wraparound porches and meticulously maintained lawns.

Easy access to village parks and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Living in Northfield means you’re never far from green space. Smith Park is one of the village’s main gathering spots, with a playground, baseball field and open areas perfect for picnics or casual outdoor time. From June through October, the village hosts monthly movie nights at the park.

For nature lovers, Pitluk Preserve offers about 11 acres of forests, wildflower prairies and a scenic ravine. It also borders Cuyahoga Valley National Park, where you can explore 100-plus miles of hiking trails, scenic waterfalls, and the Brandywine and Boston Mills ski resorts. The park is also home to Blossom Music Center, a major outdoor concert venue, and the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, which offers sightseeing rides all year.

Entertainment, dining and errands are all close by

MGM Northfield Park is a local landmark with a full-service casino and more than 200 horse races a year, plus dining and live entertainment. “Locals go there for entertainment,” Walters says. “There’s more than just gambling. There are also restaurants and concerts.” The venue includes the 1,800-seat Center Stage and four restaurants. Outside the casino, you can find a handful of local dining favorites, including Northfield Inn Restaurant, which has been serving Italian and American classics since 1960.

Dawn Semancik, a real estate agent with Real of Ohio and a longtime Summit County resident, says you don’t have to go far for everyday essentials. Nearby shopping centers like The Crossings at Golden Link and Macedonia Commons, both less than 3 miles from the village, make errands easy. “There’s a Giant Eagle, Target, Lowe’s and a Home Depot,” Semancik says. She adds that the area has changed significantly over time, evolving from a rural landscape to a more suburban one: “Years and years ago, people moving here would find mostly farmland and things like that, but now there’s a lot more development and shopping.”

Direct routes to Akron and Cleveland

Northfield’s central location is a major part of its appeal. “It’s near the state turnpike, and you have the means to quickly get to either Cleveland or Akron,” Semancik says. Also known as Interstate 80/90, the turnpike runs 6 miles south of the village. Other major routes like Interstates 271 and 480 are less than a mile away. Although most residents rely on cars, limited public transit is available via Akron METRO bus Route 102. If you need to catch a flight, Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is a 25-minute drive.
