Known as the City of Trees, Northwoods is a 330-acre suburban enclave shrouded in hundreds of oaks within the rolling hills of Missouri. Just 8 and a half miles north of St. Louis, Northwoods offers natural woodland beauty, quick access to city amenities, and a close-knit, small-town feel. The strong sense of community is one reason Mayor Sharon Pace hasn’t considered leaving Northwoods after 50 years in the city. “People really love it here,” she says. “A lot of our neighbors have been here as long as I have. There are only a couple of people on the block who haven’t been here for decades.”

Cape Cods and ranch-style homes are common
Lined up among the city’s outstretched, mature oaks are more than 1,700 houses, mostly single-family homes built in the mid-20th century. These include sturdy brick Tudors with stone ornamentation reminiscent of the stylings of a gingerbread house and Cape Cod revivals, a home style known for its efficient use of space. That efficiency comes in handy in Northwoods, where the average square footage – 1,151 – is more than 1,000 square feet less than the national average. However, homebuyers can pick up properties in Northwoods for far less than the national average price. Prices range from $20,000 to $180,000, with the average home selling for around $80,000. Two- and three-bedroom fixer uppers needing interior overhauls are available for less than $50,000, while a meticulously maintained 1930s Tudor with refinished hardwood floors and an updated kitchen can be found in the high $100,000s.

Tucked behind city hall is the City of Northwoods Park, which provides a playground and a baseball field, separated by a long pavilion between the two. “Northwoods Park is the hub,” says Pace. “It’s a common gathering spot for parties and reunions.” The park opens every year from spring till summer, closing for the season on Halloween weekend.
