Residential and agricultural by the Stanislaus River
East Oakdale was formed at the site of a 19th-century Stanislaus River ferry crossing. It's more rural and less densely populated than neighboring Oakdale, a city that grew up near another ferry crossing. Oakdale proudly claims the title "Cowboy Capital of the World" and is renowned for hosting the region's first outdoor rodeo. East Oakdale has open space, parks, sizeable homes and a country club, whereas Oakdale has a downtown and tightly laid out streets.
"East Oakdale is considered the county, but for mail and all that stuff, they call us Oakdale," says John Marsella, "Farmer John," the sole proprietor of Marsella Family Vineyards. "Everybody here is tied into town. Oakdale has a nice meld of urban and rural." He describes the area as unique and eclectic: "We have farmers who are farming nuts, we have cattlemen with cows and dairies, we have some big packing plants and a big seed company. There are people with all different likes and beliefs, but it's quite unified."
Craftsman homes dot the East Oakdale landscape.

Some subdivisions have wide streets and tidy sidewalks; driveways and multicar garages are common.

Oakdale Rodeo and Oakdale Cowboy Museum
The Oakdale Rodeo, held for over 70 years, takes place the second weekend of April. People don their best western gear—wranglers, cowboy boots, and classic ten-gallon hats — as they gather to cheer on saddle-roping, barrel races and bull riding. Alamosa Hat Works and Buckworth Western Wear are go-to's for a pre-rodeo shopping spree.
The area's Old West history is displayed at the Oakdale Cowboy Museum. Period photographs, antique saddles and cowboy gear commemorate the cowboy legacy.
