Caballo Hills
Mixed single-family home styles and multi-level condos
Caballo Hills is made up of varying streetscapes — from straight and flat to softly winding and steeply sloped. Most houses are situated close together with modest, well-maintained front yards. Homes in the Ridgemont subdivision and along Campus Drive typically sit at the neighborhood’s highest points, offering more unobstructed bay and city skyline views. Common housing styles are ranch-styles and split-levels built in the 1980s, followed by newer, more expansive Mediterranean designs. Prices typically range from $1.2 million to $3.2 million. Condos and townhouses here are usually contemporary in style. Some are situated along the lower, flatter parts of the neighborhood, whereas most of the newer constructions on Skyview Drive offer a higher vantage point. Townhouse prices range from $750,000 to $1 million, while condos, typically two- to three-levels, have a wider price range. These start around $500,000 for a 1,000-square-foot unit and go up to $1.3 million for a 3,000-square-foot luxury condo.Nearby shopping centers with local dining and boutiques
Shopping and dining offerings are not too far outside of Caballo Hills. Lincoln Square Shopping Center is less than a few miles north, featuring a Safeway supermarket, CVS and local eateries, including Red Boy Pizza. This Bay Area chain bakes pies from nearly a century-old dough recipe. Hunan Yuan serves Chinese fare, while Sparky’s Giant Burgers is a casual spot for classic American food. Farmer Joe’s Marketplace is a few miles west on Macarthur Boulevard with organic grocery items and local produce. More restaurants, shops and boutiques are lined along this boulevard, including LaliSimone, a popular vintage clothing store.Public schools with special academies and Merritt College

Caballo Hills is also home to Merritt College, a community college well known for its highly ranked nursing program.Hiking and biking trails surrounded by redwood trees
The neighborhood has two heavily forested nature hotspots, including the Leona Canyon Regional Open Space Preserve. This 290-acre hiking and biking site winds into a secluded crevice of the Oakland Hills, with the Rifle Range Branch waterway flowing at the bottom. Leona Heights Park, located on the northwest side of the neighborhood, features redwood tree-studded trails highlighted by small waterfalls and creeks. Its popular one-mile York Trail leads up to a steep 600-foot-high scenic peak. Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park is just outside and north of Caballo Hills, with even more trails, campgrounds and natural wildlife sightings.Next to a main thoroughfare and public bus stops
Route 13 sits next to Caballo Hills, a main thoroughfare for getting around the city and into downtown Oakland. It’s also bordered by Interstate 580, which leads to the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Multiple bus stops are located within Caballo Hills, particularly along Campus Drive next to Merritt College. The Oakland International Airport is just 8 miles south.Summer solstice parties and musicals at nearby Joaquin Miller Park
The community organizes a few social events at Leona Heights Park, including a Summer Solstice party in June to celebrate the longest day of the year. The event features live DJ music and special performances. Joaquin Miller Park, located a few miles north in neighboring Woodminster, hosts annual events that draw in residents throughout the greater Oakland Hills region. The park’s annual summer musical series has been an area favorite since 1967, with top-level productions of shows like “Gypsy” and “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”Lower crime scores
