Cleveland Heights
Shopping and dining along Lakeshore Avenue
Cleveland Heights is primarily residential but has some local businesses within the neighborhood. Haddon Hill Café is a coffee shop known for baked goods like khachapuri, a Georgian cheese bread. Leaning Tower of Pizza is a neighborhood staple, serving the area since 1972. The casual pizza joint serves sourdough thin crust and Detroit-style deep dish pies. Several more local businesses are about a 1-mile walk north of the neighborhood on Lakeshore Avenue. Restaurants here include Bardo Lounge & Supper Club, a midcentury modern-style eatery serving a seasonal menu. This street also has multiple local clothing and gift shops and chain stores like Gap. Groceries are available at Trader Joe’s or Lakeshore Produce. The neighborhood is also close to what Lefour calls the best farmers market in town. “It’s amazing. It has really high-quality stuff and all different types of vendors,” she says. Grand Lake Farmers Market occurs each Saturday at Splash Pad Park and hosts over 100 vendors selling produce, flowers and prepared foods.Easy access to Lake Merritt
Multiple parks offer plenty of ways to get outside in Cleveland Heights. Lake Merritt is a 155-acre lake surrounded by a 3-mile trail. The area is constantly full of walkers, runners and bikers. Several attractions surround the lake, like the 7-acre gardens featuring Bonsai trees and rhododendrons. Children’s Fairyland is a kids-oriented theme park on the lake’s north shore with a carousel, Ferris wheel and train. The Cleveland Cascade is another park in the neighborhood, which Lefour says is popular for exercise. The Cascade was built in 1923 and originally included a staircase with an Italian-inspired waterfall in the middle. The water feature has since been turned off, but the stairs remain, offering a spot for working out individually or with a group. FM Smith Recreation Center has an outdoor basketball court and playground, plus an indoor computer lab and multipurpose room. The center offers after-school programs and has a multilingual staff speaking English, Spanish, Cantonese and Mandarin.Distinct California home styles in Cleveland Heights
