Spend an evening at The New Parkway Theater, a comfy location with couches and cafe eats. Take your little ones to the nearby Children’s Fairyland U.S.A. This amusement park sits on the shores of Lake Merritt and is one of the first themed amusement parks in the country. Explore over 10 acres of rides and live animals in this immersive, creative environment that’s been putting smiles on children’s faces since 1950.
Neighborhood parks range from wild trails to basketball courts
If you’re seeking fresh air, head to Oak Glen Park. This long, curving park doesn’t have much in the way of benches, playground equipment or additional amenities. Instead, this ravine-like stretch of wild greenery is surrounded by a narrow, dirt trail shaded by dense overhanging trees so you can enjoy a brisk morning walk around a bit of untamed Oakland wilderness. Oak Park is another option situated on the site of a former elementary school. After the space was converted into condominiums, the park was created for residents to enjoy with a basketball court and playground.
Peruvian fare, cat cafés and classic baked goods nearby
Limón is a contemporary Peruvian restaurant with a vibrant atmosphere and specialty cocktails. For a unique experience, visit Cat Town, a feline-themed cafe where you can enjoy snacks and some warm, furry company, and even adopt if you like. If you’re craving something sweet, try Ladyfingers Bakery. This traditional bakery has everything from cakes to pastries and has been serving the community since 1979. Locals can get their groceries from a variety of nearby stores like Whole Foods Market, Spotty’s Market, Grocery Outlet and Sprouts Farmers Market.
