Happening Oakland district just north of downtown
A diverse, buzzy district near downtown, Northgate-Oakland provides all the conveniences of modern urban living. “The great thing about this neighborhood is that it is very centrally located,” says Simon Black, a Realtor with Red Oak Realty. “Within a half-mile, you have two BART stations, and there are just so many restaurants, retail businesses and entertainment venues on your doorstep.” Multi-family housing, highlighted by modern condominiums, makes up the bulk of the neighborhood’s residential options, although a small mix of established homes and million-dollar-plus contemporary homes also can be found.
Catch the latest movie or grab a bite to eat at hip eateries
No matter where you live within the neighborhood, there are dozens of dining, retail and entertainment options within walking distance. Featured eateries include Kingston 11, which offers a fusion of Caribbean and California cuisine from the mind of chef-owner Nigel Jones, a native Jamaican, and is known for its selection of rum-based cocktails; and The Crown: Royal Lab & Tasting Room, a contemporary coffee shop. KP Asian Market, a full-service grocer that specializes in Korean food, is conveniently located in the middle of the neighborhood. Adjacent is Telegraph, also known as Beeryland, a popular weekend gathering spot that has become increasingly trendy amid gentrification. Across the street is New Parkway Theater, which offers eclectic seating, including couches, in a unique, cozy environment that showcases mainstream movies and independent films. “It’s a very urban neighborhood experiencing a lot of growth,” says Black. “It’s vibrant and constantly evolving for the better.”

Multifamily housing reigns supreme in this walkable neighborhood
Condominiums are spread throughout the neighborhood, which is bordered on the west by Interstate 980 and the south by downtown Oakland. Built between 2004 and 2008, the one- and two-bedroom residences are typically priced between $400,000 and $800,000 and range in size from 700 square feet to 1,400 square feet. “The typical housing attracts a variety of folks, but I’ve found that the people who really come to love living in the condos arrived with a car and ended up getting rid of it because it was so centrally located that they didn’t need it,” says Black. While the neighborhood’s single-family options are limited, they span more than 100 years, from established homes built at the turn of the 20th century to contemporary homes built in the early 21st century, all within a few doors on the same block.
