Growing suburban community that overlooks the San Francisco Bay
Oak Knoll is no stranger to change. It started as a golf course community before becoming the site of a massive World War II hospital and then transforming into a densely populated suburb in Oakland's foothills. And even more changes are on the horizon as progress continues in the development of a massive master-planned community that will bring new parks, a mixed-use town center, and more than 900 townhomes and single-family dwellings to the community. But progress isn't the only thing this neighborhood is known for. It's also sought after for its natural beauty, a characteristic highlighted by the King Estate Open Space Park, a large hilltop meadow that takes up nearly half the community.
Oak Knoll residents enjoy beautiful views for a reasonable price.

Scenic hikes at King Estate Open Space Park
Oak Knoll offers easy access to King Estate Open Space Park, a hidden gem with winding walking trails, a rolling meadow dotted with brush and panoramic views of San Francisco Bay. It is surrounded by several residential streets, meaning it's within walking distance for many. "Some of the homes along Aster back up to the park," says Krista Miller, a Realtor with Abio Properties. "I sold one house on Aster where the owners built steps from their home up to the ridge, allowing them quick access to run around in the park during COVID-19." Miller's been selling in the area for more than 20 years. And because it sits atop a hill, it's also a go-to viewing spot for Fourth of July fireworks. While wildfires rarely affect this community, about half of the Oakland Hills area is designated a high-risk fire zone. To mitigate the threat, the Oakland Fire Department proactively works to protect this community by scheduling annual goat grazing in the park. See more exotic creatures at the Oakland Zoo, which borders the community. This spacious wildlife conservation park houses more than 850 animals and is one of the nation's top-ranked zoos, maintaining accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The zoo is technically inside the 453-acre Knowland Park, Oakland's largest public park. The wide-open meadow overlooks the bay and is a popular spot for sunset viewings and scenic hikes.
Oak Knoll's views are truly a sight to behold.

Modest twentieth century homes
Along the neighborhood's sloping streets sit an array of one-of-a-kind homes built in the twentieth century. Many draw influence from Spanish Mission, Tudor Revival, craftsman, and ranch-style architecture. These spacious residences often feature attached garages and are surrounded by brushy vegetation and towering palms and oaks. Since most homes were built between the 1950s and '70s, many have been renovated to include modern amenities and contemporary open floor plans. Modest two- to three-bedroom homes in the area sell for between $500,000 and $800,000, while larger three- to five-bedroom dwellings can go for between $800,000 and $1.2 million. "The big draw of Oak Knoll is that you get more for your money, more personal outdoor space, and you've got nature all around you," says Red Oak Realty Realtor and 20-year Bay Area resident Leslie Bandy. "There's been an influx of younger people moving to the area who could work from home and were looking for more space," she says. Brandy's been selling in the area for nine years. The homes coming to the new development will be a mix of single-family homes and townhomes of the attached and detached variety. They are expected to reflect farmhouse and West Coast craftsman styles, including bungalow and Spanish Mission.

Shopping, dining just outside of town
The neighborhood is mainly residential, but dining and shopping options are well within reach. Roderick's BBQ is a no-frills community staple about 1 mile outside of town.
