Redwood Heights

To the redwood forests of Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park
The Redwood Heights Recreation Center is a hub for the community located at the intersection of Aliso Avenue and Redwood Road. The center hosts classes for kids and adults, neighborhood association meetings, after-school care and more. Redwood Heights Park is undergoing a transformation thanks to neighborhood efforts and has seen the addition of a butterfly garden and a pavilion. Plans are in the works to redesign the park with features like a zip line, open green space, a half basketball court and a pickleball court. Thousands of acres of redwood groves and outdoor adventure are a short drive away from the neighborhood. “Redwood Heights is a very green area,” says Andrea Gordon, a Realtor with Compass. “There are a lot of parks around, and it’s just on the other side of Joaquin Miller Park, Redwood Regional Park and Leona Canyon.” The neighborhood is roughly 2 miles from the sprawling 1,883-acre Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park, where 150-foot-tall coastal redwoods harbor rare wildlife like the golden eagle. Hikers, bikers and horseback riders take advantage of more than 40 miles of trails throughout the park, including the East Bay Skyline National Trail and the Bay Area Ridge Trail. Also about 2 miles away, Joaquin Miller Park is a favorite location where visitors can wander through redwood groves. The park is also home to a public observatory at the Chabot Space and Science Center, where patrons can see the stars or catch a show at the planetarium. The Oakland Zoo is less than 5 miles from the neighborhood via Interstate 580.Close to the vibrant Laurel District
Just across Highway 13, locally known as the Warren Freeway, the Lincoln Square Shopping Center is a small neighborhood shopping center with a Safeway grocery store and CVS. For a bite to eat, Sparky’s Giant Burgers is a long-time American eatery known for serving up classic burgers made with grass-fed beef. Along MacArthur Boulevard, the Laurel District is a favorite dining, shopping and entertainment district. Murals adorn the boutiques, art galleries, salons, bars and restaurants that call the commercial corridor home. Jo’s Modern Thai was featured in Michelin Guide California in 2022 and recognized for its traditional Thai flavors with a twist, with menu items like drunken noodles with barbecue brisket. Degree Plato is a Latin kitchen and tap room known for its family-friendly atmosphere and local craft beer selection. There’s also Ghost Town Brewing, a local craft brewpub with a sunny, pup-friendly patio.Million-dollar Contemporary and Craftsman homes
Redwood Heights began as a close-in suburb of Oakland in the early 20th century, years after giant redwoods were cut down to help build the Bay Area cities that rose following the California Gold Rush in the mid-1800s. The neighborhood has a variety of styles, including contemporary, Mission, Craftsman, bungalows and midcentury modern. The hilly, sidewalk-lined streets are a hallmark of the community. Some hillside homes have sweeping views of San Francisco Bay. “Craftsman and midcentury modern homes built between the 1930s and 1950s are the most common, but you’ll find some trophy-style homes along 35th Avenue and Redwood Road,” Gordon says. Bungalows and cottages under 1,000 square feet can range from $625,000 to $800,000. Homes of any style over 1,000 square feet can fetch between $1 million and $2 million.Skyline High School has college credit and career pathways
Part of the Oakland Unified School District, students can attend Redwood Heights Elementary School and Bret Harte Middle School to prepare for studies at Skyline High School. Niche gives Redwood Heights and Skyline a score of B, while Harte has a C. Among the high school’s notable graduates are actor Tom Hanks and ESPN commentator Rod Gilmore. Teens can take free college classes through the school’s dual enrollment partnership with Peralta Community College. The district also offers Linked Learning Pathways. Toward the end of their freshman year, students select a pathway in one of four industry sectors and form a small learning community with teachers starting their sophomore year. Over three years, students get integrated college and career prep with hands-on experience through business partnerships alongside core academics. Skyline offers four pathways in green energy, education and community health, computer technology, and visual and performing arts.Culture and community at the Laurel StreetFair
Making its debut in 2001, the annual Laurel StreetFair celebrates the Bay Area’s global community every August. Nominated for Best of Oakland Magazine’s 2024 Best Cultural Event, the festival draws 15,000 people each year as they celebrate culture and community through live music, folklore, art and international cuisine. The Redwood Heights Association hosts regular events throughout the year, including movie nights and mini concerts in Redwood Heights Park.Access to I-580
Redwood Heights is bordered by the Freeman Expressway and I-580, which meet at the southeast end of the neighborhood. MacArthur Boulevard is another busy thoroughfare in the community. The neighborhood’s hilly terrain makes it primarily car-dependent, but there are plenty of bus routes along 35th Avenue. Oakland International Airport has select domestic and international flights less than 7 miles away, but for a wider selection of flights travelers can head to San Francisco International Airport about 25 miles away. Medical care is available at Highland Hospital roughly 3 miles west. Downtown Oakland is 7 miles away via I-580.Air quality issues and risk of fire
The American Lung Association's 2024 State of the Air report ranked the Bay Area — which includes Oakland, San Francisco and San Jose — as the fifth-worst city for year-round particle pollution. Local pollution sources like cars and freights contribute to the problem. The Oakland port is one of the busiest in the country. Smoke from wildfires also contributes to the area’s air quality issues. Redwood Heights and Oakland itself are at minimal risk of wildfires, but the redwood forests to the east — including Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park — are in the state’s very high fire hazard severity zones.
