Oakland's school neighborhood
Just off of I-580 and set amidst a melting pot of cultures, the School neighborhood in Oakland features tree-lined residential streets filled with colorful California homes, towering palms and pines and easy access to shops, restaurants and schools. Neighbors jog along the sidewalks, stop to pet pups on their daily walks and gather for block parties. Small touches like community "little library" book shares and front yard gardens enhance the neighborhood's homey, unpretentious feel. And, with price points well below San Francisco's median sale price of $1.4 million, it offers value, especially for first-time homebuyers.
Homes, condos, and apartments in Oakland
The neighborhood comprises a mix of well-established single-family homes, condos and apartments, with some new construction mixed in. Many of the single-family homes in School are 1920s bungalows and ranch houses featuring Craftsman and Mission Revival architecture or early 1900s Victorian and Queen Anne houses, all in bright yellow, green, blue and pink hues. Lots tend to be small, but homeowners make the most of their space with colorful landscaping. With complete renovations, a 1,200-square-foot home with three bedrooms might sell for $650,000 or go for closer to $950,00 with 1,700 square feet, four bedrooms and a garage. Smaller homes waiting for renovations can be found below $500,000, while two-bedroom condos might be priced in the high $300,000s.
Most of the single-family homes in the School neighborhood are older homes with lots of charm.
