Outdoor recreation among the redwoods

Skyline-Hillcrest Estates is immersed in nature, with vast parks surrounding the neighborhood. “It’s quiet up there, and the access to outdoor space is pretty special,” says Realtor Mary Canavan of The Grubb Company, who has sold homes in the Bay Area for over three decades. “However, they’re farther away from amenities, so you definitely have to be prepared for a commute.” Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park conserves over 1,800 acres of redwood groves and nature trails to the north of this community. It’s also home to the Chabot Space and Science Center, a popular destination for families. Leona Heights Park and the Leona Canyon Regional Open Space Preserve run along the neighborhood’s western fringe. It features a challenging 600-foot climb to an overlook with sweeping views of Oakland and the San Francisco Bay.

Postwar homes range from ranch styles to expansive hillside estates

Skyline-Hillcrest Estates is a product of Oakland’s postwar suburbanization, with most homes dating to the 1950s and 60’s. Residences have been meticulously maintained and remain among Oakland’s most in-demand properties. You’ll find everything from relatively small ranch-style homes to colossal estates with acres of land. "On one side of Skyline Boulevard, you’ve got beautiful views of the Oakland and San Francisco skyline. On the other side, you've got unobstructed views of hills and canyons that go for miles,” says Realtor Stephanie Hevezi of Engle & Voelkers, who lives in the neighborhood. Prices range from around $1.2 million to more than $4 million, depending on their size. The neighborhood is very quiet compared to Oakland’s urban core — you’re more likely to wake up to the sounds of local wildlife than the sounds of the city.

Cooler hillside weather creates its own Oakland microclimate

Skyline-Hillcrest Estates benefits from a cooler microclimate compared to Downtown Oakland and the inner East Bay. Foggy weather is common, especially during the summer months. Temperatures are generally mild year-round, with fewer very hot days than at lower elevations. "We're about 1,000 feet up, so the weather tends to be a little cooler. It's in its own little microclimate. We could have clear skies while the rest of the city is in a fog, or vice versa," Hevezi says.
