California bungalows and craftsman homes dominate
Homes tend to sit on small lots with front yards planted with hardy shrubs and trees or filled with mulch or rock beds. Most were built in the early 1900s, with the most popular styles being California bungalows with wide front porches, craftsman homes with decorative rafters and beam work and Pueblo Revivals with smooth stucco facades. Homebuyers can also find the occasional American Foursquare, Spanish Revival or minimalist traditional-style home. Single-family dwellings generally sell for between $1 million and $2.5 million. Multi-family options in the area include duplexes and condos, which range from $660,000 to $1.8 million.Sports facilities, playgrounds at Mosswood Park
Several popular public amenities are available to residents, including the Temescal Pool, which offers swimming lessons and summer leagues for community members. Just next door sits the Studio One Arts Center, a community hub where locals of all ages and artistic levels can take visual, digital, and performing arts classes led by masters of their crafts. For outdoor recreation, residents will need to visit neighboring communities like Mosswood, where the expansive eponymous park offers sporting facilities, a community garden, age-designated playgrounds, and picnicking areas. Another popular nearby outdoor space is the Friends of Rockridge-Temescal Greenbelt, or FROG Park, which is situated along the spine of Temescal Creek and features two custom playgrounds, a climbing wall, butterfly gardens and redwood groves.Oakland Technical High highlights career preparedness
Kids may belong to the Oakland Unified School District, which includes Emerson Elementary School, graded a C-minus on Niche, Claremont Middle School, graded a B, and Oakland Technical High School, graded an A. Students at Oakland Technical High can pursue CTE pathways by enrolling in one of five specialized academies focusing on race, policy and law, engineering, fashion, health and computer science. Temescal is also home to Park Day School, a private elementary and middle school specializing in hands-on learning and emotional and social development.Annual events hosted by the TTBID
The community organization supporting the Temescal Telegraph Business Improvement District hosts several annual community events, including the popular Temescal Street Fair, the neighborhood's biggest festival. It runs along Telegraph Avenue each June and includes live music, family-friendly activities, local vendors and shopping. A reoccurring community event is the Temescal Farmers Market, held every Sunday in the parking lot of the local DMV on Claremont Avenue. "If you're looking for something move slower paced, you go to the Orinda market, but if you're looking for something more trendy and bustling, you go to Temescal," Nzessi says. One unique amenity residents can access is a Tool Lending Library, a free tool borrowing service through the Temescal branch of the Berkeley Public Library.Highly walkable and easy access to public transit
Not only is Temescal extremely walkable, but residents can easily access several modes of public transit. Public Bay Area Rapid Transit buses pick up throughout the community, and two BART train stations, the MacArthur and Rockridge, sit just outside town. To travel internationally, residents can head about 13 miles south on U.S. Interstate Highway 880 to Oakland International Airport. Award-winning medical care is also nearby, with the Oakland branch of the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital brushing up to the neighborhood.Curbside dining and boutique shopping along Telegraph Avenue
The shops and eateries lining Telegraph Avenue make up what is called the Temescal Telegraph Business Improvement District. This trendy commercial strip is locals' primary shopping and dining area and is constantly maintained and updated by the Temescal Telegraph BID organization. One popular eatery on the strip is DAYTRIP, a high-end spot specializing in sharable plates and drink flights that describes itself as a "party restaurant and bottle shop." Residents also rave about Hancook, a locally owned Korean hot pot eatery known for its vibey environment and traditional kimchi. Koryo Sushi is a go-to for late-night outings, serving everything from sushi to udon into the early morning hours. And for something sweet, locals swear by Bakesale Betty, a small shop that sells a variety of decadent desserts alongside fried chicken and tofu sandwiches. Residents also have plenty of grocery options within reach, including chains such as Whole Foods and Safeway and small local shops like Piedmont Grocery Co. and Monte Vista Food Center.
