New subdivisions in semi-rural Oakley, California
Custom-built homes, new subdivisions and wide-open green space come together in a whirl of color in Neroly. Situated between the San Joaquin River and the Mount Diablo foothills, the horizon line of this semi-rural neighborhood is a splash of slanted roofs, palm fronds and leafy oak trees. It’s located in the heart of Oakley, California, about as far as one can get from San Francisco while still living in the East Bay. “We’re at the bloody edge of the Bay Area. It’s just off the beaten path enough where you’ve got some space and you’re not surrounded by strip malls,” says Realtor Daniel Ornelas of Exp Realty, a longtime East Bay resident.
Neroly showcases a diverse range of charming single-family homes.
The neighborhood is known for its spacious lots with tree-lined streets in Neroly.

New construction, landscaped yards and backyard swimming pools
Neroly’s subdivisions were largely constructed in the last three decades. They feature spacious, contemporary homes with attached garages. Streets are lined with sidewalks, trees and California greenery. There are a range of lot sizes here, with some homes situated on sprawling, gated properties with enough room for a backyard pool. “It’s not very congested. People aren’t right on top of each other. You’ve got some space between you and your neighbors,” Ornelas says. Prices range from around $650,000 to $1.2 million, putting it well below the Bay Area median. “It’s one of the most affordable regions in the Bay Area,” Ornelas adds.

Fishing and boating on the San Joaquin River
Residents are just minutes away from the San Joaquin River, which runs from Stockton to the mouth of the San Pablo Bay. The neighborhood’s shoreline is partially industrial but is dotted with marinas where locals can set sail for a day of fishing. Antioch/Oakley Regional Shoreline and Big Break Regional Shoreline feature boat slips and docks like Driftwood Marina, Sportsmen Yacht Club and Bridge Marina Yacht Club. Hiking, biking and outdoor adventures can be found about 10 miles south in the Mount Diablo foothills. Sprawling parks like Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve and Round Valley Regional Preserve offer plenty of wide-open space, grassy meadows and brush-laden hillsides to explore. Several small community parks are available, including Almondridge Park, Holly Creek Park and Crockett Park.
Fishing is one of many things you can do in the pier at the regional shoreline.

The next step is Deer Valley High School, which earns a B-plus. The high school is notable for its planetarium, which is one of very few within a public school in the Bay Area. Mac’s Old House — a relic from another era
Mac’s Old House is an institution in Oakley. It got its start in the 1950s when Floyd “Mac” McKinney opened part of his house as a bar on St. Patrick’s Day. Today, it remains as popular as ever, serving a mix of American classics and Italian staples in its cozy relic of a dining room. “It’s been there forever. It’s a cozy little spot. If you move out there, you find out about it pretty quick,” Ornelas says. A few blocks away, residents can stop off for breakfast at Bridgehead Café, a hole-in-the-wall diner. Additional shopping and dining can be found close to home at Oakley Town Center, which has a Lucky grocery store, a pizzeria, a Vietnamese Pho restaurant and a Mexican restaurant.
Getting around the East Bay by car or rail
State Route 4 cuts east to west through Neroly, offering a convenient route to Stockton, which is about 34 miles east, and to Concord, about 20 miles to the west. “Without traffic, it’s about an hour to San Francisco and Sacramento,” Ornelas says. Neroly may be in the deep outskirts of the East Bay, but it benefits from a BART train stop just west of the neighborhood. Residents can hop on the train and get all over the Bay Area, from San Francisco to North San Jose. Oakland International Airport is about 60 miles away. Those in need of medical care will find Kaiser Permanente Antioch Medical Center about 5 miles away.
