Suburban neighborhood with history and recreation
Sitting at the base of the Wasatch Mountain range, East Bench is a residential neighborhood in Ogden that explores nature and time with prehistoric parks, vintage shops and century-old houses. “It’s a very balanced, diverse community, from high-end homes to lower income,” says Ogden native Jenny Francl, the third-generation owner of Rainbow Gardens, a gift emporium. “We also have the most beautiful views of the mountains.” While many of the streets are lined with single-story homes, the northern area of the neighborhood, following the Ogden River, has attractions and showcases Utah’s vibrant landscape.

A mixed bag of single-family housing options
A wide variety of housing styles line East Bench’s gridded streets. Most properties come with manicured lawns surrounded by mature trees, with street parking in the front. “These older homes aren’t cookie-cutter like newer houses are,” says Realtor Raquel Ocana with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, who has almost 10 years of experience. “Everything is quite unique here; people just really enjoy having a home with character.” Traditional single-story homes, bungalows with cottage-inspired architecture and brick ranch-style homes are common. These properties were built between the 1920s and 1950s, span 1,500 to 3,000 square feet and cost $375,000 to $500,000.
Lot sizes increase in size the closer homes get to the mountains. Bi-levels and split-level homes dot the neighborhood’s eastern side, with tucked-in garages. There are also a handful of multi-story homes with Craftsman features. These bigger properties were built from the 1980s to 2000s, span 2,000 to 3,000 square feet and are priced $500,000 to $650,000. Contemporary townhouses are rare, but a few communities within the neighborhood have them going for $250,000 to $400,000.

Ogden’s mountain trails and neighborhood parks
East Bench’s location along the Wasatch Mountains presents plenty of opportunities to get outside. Multiple trailheads travel from the streets up into the landscape, all connected by the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, creating an extensive system that runs along the entire ridge. There are entrances to the trails on both 22nd and 27th streets and on Ogden Canyon Road. These gravel pathways are surrounded by tall grass and thick, natural vegetation. “As you go up Ogden Canyon, where the waterfall is, there’s a place you can hike to and find natural-made hot springs,” says Realtor Kimberly Green with Besst Realty Group, who has over 5 years of experience.
In addition to its natural landscape, the neighborhood has several green spaces. The El Monte Golf Course is a sprawling public course maintained by the city with nine holes to the north of the neighborhood. The clubhouse sits atop a hill and looks out at the entire area. Big-Dee Sports Park is next door, with a large grassy field and playground area. East Bench’s other neighborhood parks include Lions Den Park and Jaycee Park, which has a picnic pavilion, baseball field and sledding hill.

Journeying through time at East Bench attractions
Following the Ogden River north, Park Boulevard is a winding road with multiple attractions. Rainbow Gardens is a gift emporium that sits at the site of a former hot springs healing center, which pivoted themes in the 1940s but remains an area staple. The shop sells everything from seasonal decorations and garden accessories to kitchenware, clothing and novelty items. Across the street is the George S. Eccles Dinosaur Park. “We have your typical museum fare like bones and gemstones, but in addition to that we have eight acres with prehistoric sculptures,” says Jeff Bond, the park’s education director. Visitors can walk along the pathways and learn about extinct species from roughly 100 life-size statues. In addition to being a field trip hotspot, the park and its paleontology lab draw educators and researchers studying the field as well.

Getting educated at Ogden City schools
Children living in East Bench can start their education at Polk Elementary School, which earns a B-plus grade from Niche. From there, students can attend either Mound Fort Junior High School or Mount Ogden Junior High School, depending on where they live in the neighborhood. Mound Fort maintains a C, while Mount Ogden has a C-plus. Ogden High School has a B Niche grade and offers an International Baccalaureate (IB) program. The neighborhood also offers private school options, such as Saint Joseph Catholic School, which earns an A and, according to Niche, is the No. 5 best private high school in Utah.

A smattering of local shops and restaurants
While most of the neighborhood is residential, East Bench has a handful of scattered local eateries. “It’s very eclectic. There are some cute little mom-and-pop coffee shops in the area that are inside regular houses,” Green says. Kaffe Mercantile is one, serving breakfast bites and specialty coffee. Timbermine Steakhouse is a themed fine-dining restaurant with a pioneer-inspired exterior. Patrons can order steak and seafood to the table and craft beer and cocktails at the bar. At the intersection of Harrison Boulevard and 21st Street, Albertson’s Center has a Dollar Tree and A Fresh Market. Restaurants include Sabai Jai, which has Thai cuisine, and Domino’s. Smith’s is another grocery store option on Canyon Road.

Traveling in and around East Bench
Gridded streets and narrow sidewalks lend to a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood. “A lot of people like living on the east side of Harrison Boulevard because they can walk to the mountain trails from their house,” Ocana says. Drivers can access the rest of Ogden through Harrison, also known as Utah state Highway 203, which also includes bus stops. Additionally, Utah state Highway 39, known as Ogden Canyon Road, travels into the Wasatch Mountains to Huntsville, about 13 miles away, and the Snowbasin Ski Resort. Downtown Ogden is roughly 2 miles away.
