Just 10 miles east of Michigan’s capital are the verdant outdoor spaces and peaceful subdivisions of Okemos. Students attend highly rated Okemos Public Schools
Niche names Okemos the best place to live in Michigan, citing its family-friendly atmosphere and outstanding public schools, all earning overall grades of A and A-plus. The community’s young learners can attend Hiawatha Elementary from kindergarten through fourth grade before spending the next two years at Kinawa School. Chippewa Middle School earns an A-plus overall grade and is the best public middle school in Michigan, according to Niche. Students here will find over 20 unique elective offerings to consider, including yoga, video production, integrated technology and ceramics and three-dimensional design. Also with an outstanding overall grade is Okemos High School, which, according to Niche, is the best public high school in the Lansing area. Many students here get involved in extracurricular activities, with a lengthy list of clubs to peruse with topics ranging from Dungeons & Dragons and chess to archery and journalism.
Riverside parks are a favorite in Okemos
Eight parks can be found along the Red Cedar River and numerous others dot the residential streets. Parents can bring the kids to enjoy the playground at Ferguson Park, where folks can also be found launching their canoe or kayak for a drift down the river or casting a line from the bank. Hatrick Park is home to baseball and soccer facilities along with a covered picnic area and a mile of scenic nature trails. The Harris Nature Center is on the community’s east side along Van Atta Road, where locals can learn about local wildlife and walk along wooded paths.
The Red Cedar River is 51 miles long and cuts right through the center of Okemos.
Ferguson Park is used annually by school groups as a release site for salmon.

Okemos residents are just a stone’s throw from ample shopping and dining options. The Meridian Mall houses nearly 100 eateries and retailers. Locals can pick up their groceries and other household essentials at Kroger, Target or Meijer.
