Charming suburb east of Lansing and Michigan State

Just 10 miles east of Michigan’s capital are the verdant outdoor spaces and peaceful subdivisions of Okemos. Named after the Chippewa Chief, John Okemos, the community is split in half by the Red Cedar River, which contributes to the area’s lush landscape. Okemos lies just east of Michigan State University, one of Lansing's largest employers, so many locals enjoy short commutes.

Colonial Revivals and contemporary homes offer spacious suburban living

The housing market here features high price tags compared to Michigan’s state average. Modern traditional homes, Colonial Revivals and ranch-style homes are standard here, with an average listing price of $400,000. Those looking to build their own abode will find wooded, one-acre lots for $80,000, while cozy, two-bedroom cottages can be snagged for $270,000. Homebuyers with a budget upward of $1 million will see custom-built craftsman-style homes with over 5,000 square feet, beautifully updated interiors and private, 2-acre lots. The lanes here are lined with sidewalks, and most homes sit on half-acre lots.
