Small-town neighborhood vibes meet industrial hub in the Olyphant borough in Lackawanna County. Originally deemed the Queen City, Olyphant used to be the “Scranton of The Valley” during the coal mining boom of the 20th century. The borough has a rich history, including President Theodore Roosevelt’s famous visits to find mining solutions following the Anthracite Coal Mine Strike of 1902. Olyphant has undergone a period of revitalization, mostly due to passionate female business owners, which is fitting for a town that was home to the first woman enlisted in the US Navy. The borough’s rebirth includes new streetlighting, businesses and storefront facelifts. Downtown architecture reflects a blend of historical and contemporary styles, with clocktowers and spires resembling a small-town New England skyline. Well-preserved buildings and newer structures line the sidewalks and are framed by the Pocono Mountains. Local pride is evident through the neighborhood businesses and community events. Located only a few miles north of Scranton along the Lackawanna River, Olyphant offers a combination of small-town living and an industrial feel.
Traditional is Olyphant’s style
Traditional-style homes built in the early to mid-1900s occupy most of the borough and sell between $100,000 and $300,000. Newer traditional-style architecture can be found in houses built after 2000, starting at around $400,000. Single and two-story homes are evenly distributed throughout the neighborhood, with the occasional three-stories, having basement space. Most properties feature driveways, so street parking is not an issue. The area is somewhat walkable and bikeable outside of the trails and parks, as almost every street has sidewalks. Front lawn sizes vary, and backyards are not guaranteed at every home, as houses can be built close together.

Female-driven business changes
Situated next to one of the only centralized shopping areas in Lackawanna County, Olyphant is home to a short drive from the Giant at Sunset Crossing. Smaller locally owned convenient stores are available as well. OTOWN Bar & Grill offers family-operated service, providing the community with renowned “American food with a twist.” OTOWN owner, Tracy Bradshaw says, “It’s the people that keep customers coming back. There are no bad eggs here.” During the pandemic, a group of women determined to strengthen the community opened locally owned shops and salons. For example, Hair of the Dog Groomers was opened by three women, and TagsOn and TheKimmy are two female-owned and operated boutiques. “We are really showing people that women can run things, too,” Bradshaw concludes.

Olyphant community gathers downtown
Third Thursdays attract crowds to Olyphant for its live music, art walk and other activities hosted by small businesses. At one event, Olyphant artists designed 21 Adirondack chairs displayed throughout the borough for an auction. Money raised from the project benefited the Freedom Fighter Veterans Memorial Park located on the backside of Willow Avenue. The memorial statue honors the more than 2,000 local veterans and modern men and women in the armed forces. The Queen City Station serves as a hub for rail events such as the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Train and the Santa Claus Train. The station was part of the former Delaware & Hudson Railway, whose old president is the namesake of the borough.
Mid Valley public schools
The Mid Valley School District serves Olyphant and features two schools: Mid Valley Elementary and Mid Valley Secondary Center, both of which earn a C-plus on Niche. Mid Valley Secondary Center is a public middle and high school, where students can choose from extracurricular activities, such as the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science and a book club.
Neighborhood Parks and Lackawanna River
Olyphant spotlights views of the mountains abroad and green spaces below on valley grounds. Fern Hill Park offers a playground, sports courts and fields. The riverside Condella Park has a playground and sports facilities as well as an entry point to the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail, which stretches 70 miles, connecting over 30 communities with nature. Parks are within a short walk of most residential areas.

Olyphant is only a few miles away from Scranton, and the County of Lackawanna Transit System (COLTS) runs through the borough and surrounding areas.
