Benson
Suburban Neighborhood in Omaha, Nebraska
Douglas County 68104
Historic homes away from the nightlife
A few blocks off Maple Street and secluded from the bar scene, Benson offers multiple residential streets with tight sidewalks shaded by tall, mature trees. The neighborhood provides the opportunity to buy historic homes in various architectural styles, such as cottages, raised ranches, and Craftsman-style bungalows, on compact lots with fenced-in backyards. Buyers can expect a two-bedroom ranch to go for a little more than $180,000, while a four-bedroom bungalow will go for about $205,000.Home to the “most-used park in the city”
Spanning more than 200 acres, Benson Park is a hot spot for Benson residents and is visited by people across the city. The park has a little something for everyone, with an inclusive playground, a new splash pad for the summer and a lagoon for fishing. The park has multiple baseball and soccer fields, and golfers can take advantage of the public Benson Championship Golf Course, an 18-hole track at the park's north end. “The park is one of the best-used parks in Omaha,” Moldenhauer says. With multiple pocket parks, two well-visited options are Gallagher Park, home to a public city pool and the Benson Community Garden, where residents can flex their green thumb or enjoy live music and movie night on the Earth Stage at the Benson Community Garden.Three pathway academies offered at Benson Magnet High School
Benson is zoned for Omaha Public Schools, which scores a B-minus from Niche serving more than 51,000 young people. Each student's school is based on home address, but parents and students can apply to any school in the district if accepted. Most students will attend Benson West Elementary, which grades a C, and Monroe Middle, scoring a C-minus. Children wrap up their education at Benson Magnet High School, which grades a B-minus and offers pathway academies in design and construction, business and entrepreneurship and health professions in addition to its core courses.Celebrating Benson Days in July
Held each July, Benson Days is an annual celebration of the neighborhood to raise funds for the Benson Neighborhood Association. The family-friendly summer festival shows the community’s creative and diverse culture with a parade and varying events along Maple Street, which is closed off to the public, and Benson Park. The neighborhood association has other small events throughout the year, including a city-wide spring clean-up.Using Maple Street to get around Omaha
Omaha Metro operates multiple bus routes throughout the city, and Benson is along three different routes, including the Route 4 Maple Street. Maple Street, a section of Nebraska Highway 64, leads east toward downtown and west to Interstate 680.The nightlife on Maple Street
Most of Benson’s nightlife is in historic buildings on Maple Street. The Waiting Room is an indie rock music venue featuring local and touring acts almost nightly. For a bite to eat, residents can try Virtuoso Pizzeria for a slice from a second-generation Omaha restauranter, David Losole. Craft beer enthusiasts head to Benson to try different hops from Benson Brewery, which features an outdoor patio, or head to the Beercade, which has a vast selection of drafts and wall-to-wall arcade games. We have so many great businesses. While it's known for its nightlife, there are also things for families to do,” Moldenhauer says. Ames Avenue features several chain retail locations, including Baxter’s, for groceries, a Walmart Super Center and Home Depot.Omaha’s first creative district
In June 2022, the city was designated as Omaha’s first Creative District. Featuring beautiful, decorative murals on its building, the area has always had a passion for the arts. Being a creative district allows the neighborhood to attract and retain creatives.
