“With its unique history and its great location near Carter Lake, E R Danner has been a consistently popular place to live,” says Tina Sempeck, Realtor with eXp Realty. “Many families have lived here for generations, and they tend to hang on to their homes. The reason for that is because they’re well-built, and they’re architecturally impressive. You’ll see lots of bungalows, cottages and incredibly well-maintained American Foursquares.”

The neighborhood was originally called “Kountze Place” and was developed in the 1880s as an upscale streetcar suburb. It was home to the wildly popular 1898 Trans-Mississippi Exposition and the 1898 Greater America Exposition. Many historic homes, schools and churches were built during this time, and a few still stand today. In 1970, the neighborhood was renamed “E R Danner” after the well-respected Omaha native and nationally regarded African-American Nebraska State Senator who dedicated his life to social change.

A beautifully remodeled one-and-a-half story Arts and Crafts style bungalow with a new roof and a spacious front porch was recently listed for $184,900. A classic foursquare from 1907 with three bedrooms and 1,329 square feet recently sold for $175,000. Lothrop Magnet Elementary offers pre-K through fourth grade and is within walking distance from many schools in the neighborhood. King Science & Technology Magnet Middle offers fifth through eighth grade and has a notable student-teacher ratio of 14 to 1. Central High is an International Baccalaureate Program school offering required and elective STEM courses. Niche gives Central High an overall A- rating.

E R Danner residents enjoy the best of both worlds regarding geography. They are minutes from downtown Omaha, but they are also practically walking distance to 1,100-acre Carter Lake and Levi Carter Park. The park has baseball and football fields, basketball courts, walking trails, picnic areas, a pavilion and plenty of open space. Carter Lake is an oxbow-shaped, man-made lake that is located on the border of Nebraska and Iowa. Visitors enjoy fishing, sailing, water skiing, camping, swimming, scuba diving, and rock climbing, all while being able to view the downtown Omaha skyline. Kountze Park is located right in the heart of E R Danner and has 10 acres of ballfields, tennis courts, basketball courts, a playground and open green space.

Lonnell’s Southern Delights has earned plenty of five-star reviews for its traditional, southern homemade cooking. Try their chicken fried steak and their fried okra. Time Out Foods is one of Omaha’s oldest Black-owned restaurants and has won numerous accolades, nationwide, for their fried chicken. Boutiques and family-owned clothing stores are not far from home in E R Danner. Citi Trends offers clothes and accessories for adults and kids, as well as home goods like bed and bath decor. Lifestyle by Femme Fatale is a unique bargain boutique offering women’s clothing in all sizes. They specialize in clothes that are trendy but also lasting in style.

It's a short drive to pick up groceries at ALDI on Sorensen Parkway, or prescriptions and necessities at Walgreens on 30th Street. If you’re looking for a classic turn-of-the-20th-century home, incredibly close to downtown Omaha, come find out why E R Danner is such a sought-after destination for old house lovers.
