"East Omaha is a thriving downtown neighborhood, and people live here not only because they are so close to the energy of the surrounding city, but also because homes here really hold their value," says Tina Sempeck, a Realtor with eXp Realty. In 1854, this historic neighborhood was the first to be annexed as part of the City of Omaha. Its western half was originally settled by German and Swedish immigrants in the 1870s. Jewish immigrants started businesses and built homes in the 1910s. By the 1920s, African-American businesses, churches and homes developed. That heritage is evident today, as some of the community's leaders can trace their ancestry to that early growth period.
East Omaha borders the north edge of downtown Omaha and Creighton University. Eppley Omaha International Airport and Carter Lake are both less than a 15-minute drive away. While a majority of housing in the neighborhood is provided by large apartment buildings, about 25% of residences are free-standing homes, many of them built in the early 1900s. One and two-story cottages, bungalows and Craftsman-style homes are common. A two-bedroom, one-bathroom cottage built in 1900 with a new roof, gutters and siding recently sold for $130,000. A three-bedroom, two-bathroom, two-story cottage from 1900 with updated bathrooms and a remodeled kitchen recently sold for $155,000.
Kids can walk to local public schools. Conestoga Elementary is offers pre-k through sixth grade with a student-teacher ratio of 13 to 1. Niche gives them a C-minus rating. Lewis and Clark Middle has a C-rating from Niche. It and its partner Central High are International Baccalaureate Program schools that offer required and elective STEM courses. Niche gives Central High an overall A-minus rating.
East Omaha residents enjoy the best of both worlds regarding geography. They are essentially in downtown Omaha, but they are also just minutes away from parks and lakes. Levi Carter Park is located on the northwest edge of 1,100-acre Carter Lake. The park has baseball and football fields, basketball courts, walking trails, picnic areas, a pavilion and plenty of open space. Carter Lake is an oxbow-shaped, man-made lake that is located on the border of Nebraska and Iowa. Visitors enjoy fishing, sailing, water skiing, camping, swimming, scuba diving and rock climbing, all while being able to view the downtown Omaha skyline.
East Omaha's restaurants are a highlight of the neighborhood. As anchor businesses in this tight-knit community, they not only boast longevity and an abundance of local and national recognition, but they also give back to the community in outstanding ways. Big Mama’s Kitchen & Catering is a second-generation family-owned restaurant and catering business that donates more than 25,000 meals each year. Fans praise their homemade daily specials such as perch and walleye fillets, as well as their fried chicken and smoked featherbones. Jackson’s Fair Deal Café gives 10% off to first responders, health care providers and college students. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and are known for their catfish special and their chicken wings. Styles of Evolution is a black- and veteran-owned, fashion-forward clothing store located on Ohio Street, featuring suits, formal wear and dress shoes. LeFlores New Look Fashions features men's and boys' suits, hats and sportswear.
Nearby grocery stores include Chubb’s Finer Foods with fresh meats and fish, as well as Family Dollar with discounts on groceries, household goods and beauty products. As East Omaha nears its 170th year, it continues to write its own chapter in the story of Omaha.
