East Omaha was shaped by immigrant heritage
"East Omaha is a thriving downtown neighborhood, and people live here not only because they are so close to the energy of the surrounding city, but also because homes here really hold their value," says Tina Sempeck, a Realtor with eXp Realty. In 1854, this historic neighborhood was the first to be annexed as part of the City of Omaha. Its western half was originally settled by German and Swedish immigrants in the 1870s. Jewish immigrants started businesses and built homes in the 1910s. By the 1920s, African-American businesses, churches and homes developed. That heritage is evident today, as some of the community's leaders can trace their ancestry to that early growth period.
