Elmwood Park
Suburban Neighborhood in Omaha, Nebraska
Douglas County 68106, 68132
Cape Cods and Ranch-style homes
Laid out in a grid, the neighborhood runs north to south along the western border of its namesake park. Narrow sidewalks line the streets, shaded by towering oaks and pines. Architectural styles include Cape Cod, Federal, Tudor and ranch-style homes. Larger houses built in the late 1800s border the park, spanning 1,800 to 3,000 square feet. Smaller cottages and bungalows arrived as the neighborhood expanded west and south in the first half of the 20th century. Homes tend to sell for $190,000 to $400,000 on average.Historic Elmwood Park
At the heart of this community is historic Elmwood Park, one of Omaha's oldest city parks. “More than half the homes border the park, and the rest are just a short walk,” says Ahlvers. “Homebuyers tend to think that it’s a ‘nice’ feature, being close to a park. But once they settle in, they’re often stunned by how lucky they are to have this gorgeous space literally as their backyard.” Fringed with mature oaks and split by a stream-fed creek, Elmwood includes baseball fields, a playground, a swimming pool and a network of trails. Locals can also take advantage of the 18-hole public golf course within the grounds of the park. Plenty of landscaped sections, such as the Grotto, are popular for events such as wedding receptions. There's also a rentable pavilion available from May through September.A highly-rated school district
Westside Community Schools and Omaha Public Schools serve the residents of Elmwood Park. Students can attend Carl A. Swanson Elementary School, Westside Middle School and Westside High School, all of which received an A on Niche. Westside High follows a modular scheduling model, which incorporates a blend of large group, small group, independent and laboratory study. This provides students with greater access to teachers throughout the day and allows them to take more classes while encouraging them to practice responsibility through independence. The Memorial Park Concert and Fireworks Show
About 2 miles northeast of the community, Memorial Park is a 65-acre green space dedicated to Douglas County veterans. Every summer, people flock to the Memorial Park Concert and Fireworks Show as big-name musicians take the stage, and fireworks burst in the night sky. “It’s a great event- just a really beautiful and relaxing vibe,” says Megan Feeney, the marketing content manager at Visit Omaha. “The kids are all tumbling around and playing in the grass— adults bring wine and picnic on the lawn.”A walkable community
Though mainly car-dependent for commutes outside of the community, Elmwood Park itself is walkable and pedestrian-friendly. The major thoroughfare of 72nd Street borders the neighborhood to the west, while U.S. Route 6 borders the community to the north, providing direct access to downtown Omaha. Metro Transit offers public transportation through several bus stops along the major thoroughfare of 72nd Street. For longer-distance travel, the Eppley Airfield is about 10 miles northeast of Elmwood Park and offers about 25 nonstop destinations year-round.
Shopping and dining along 72nd Street
Major shopping and dining centers border the neighborhood to the west. Blue & Fly Asian Kitchen is a casual Chinese restaurant with a homey feel, offering both a traditional and American menu. Located on South 73rd Street, The Drover is an upscale chophouse known for their whiskey-marinated steaks. Though most shopping options are big box stores and chains, such as Aldi, Target and Best Buy, there are a few locally owned spots unique to the neighborhood, such as S & M African Boutique. Founded by a husband and wife team out of their passion for the art, clothing and textiles of West Ghana, the store provides authentic handmade African artwork, dashikis, home décor and jewelry.
