Fairacres
Suburban Neighborhood in Omaha, Nebraska
Douglas County 68132
1920s mansions surrounded by towering oaks
A web of roads curves through a cover of oaks and pines, leading into the winding driveways of Fairacres residents. Many properties are gated, some with arches accentuating the entrance. While many of the mansions are large and costly to maintain, they are desirable, with homes on average selling after two days on the market. “New homeowners are proud to own a Fairacres home, and they work hard to update and maintain them,” Ahlvers said. Brick Tudors and Colonial Revivals are most common, while Georgian, Craftsman and large ranch-style homes are sprinkled throughout. While three-bedroom homes sell for $450,000 to $700,000, homes with five bedrooms or more can fetch $1 million to $3 million.Fun at Elmwood Park and Memorial Park
Located about 1.5 miles south of Fairacres, historic Elmwood Park is one of Omaha's oldest and most well-cultivated city parks. Fringed with mature oaks, Elmwood includes baseball fields, an 18-hole golf course, a playground, a swimming pool, a web of trails and plenty of landscaped sections, such as the Grotto, popular for events like wedding receptions. There's also a rentable pavilion available from May 1st to September 30th.Bordering the neighborhood to the east, Memorial Park is a sprawling green space dedicated to Douglas County veterans. Founded in 1944, the tree-lined park stretches with 65 acres of open lawns and includes a baseball field and playground swings. New landscaping around the grassy hillside draws attention to the bronze sculpture on loan to the park called “Embracing Peace,” which re-creates the iconic V-J Day photo of a sailor embracing a nurse in Times Square in 1945. Every summer, the Memorial Park Concert and Fireworks Show draws a crowd as internationally known musicians take the stage, and fireworks light up the night sky. “It's an incredible event; folks come from all over the city,” said Megan Feeney, the marketing content manager at Visit Omaha and resident of the neighboring community, Dundee. “You’ll see throngs of people walking from Fairacres and Dundee, as well as people from a bit farther coming from the bus stops.” The night begins with a few local acts, followed by a major headliner, and then ends with a fireworks show. Melissa Etheridge, Dave Mason and Elvis Costello headlined the show in recent years. “I think for a lot of Omahans, it really signifies that summer has arrived,” Feeney said.
