Hillsborough
Suburban Neighborhood in Omaha, Nebraska
Douglas County 68164
Colonial Revivals on well-manicured lots
Tight streets wrap around Hillsborough, lined with sidewalks shaded by old-growth trees. Brick Colonial Revivals with built-in garages and Craftsman homes comprise most of the home inventory. Most addresses feature a compact, well-maintained front yard with scattered trees and fenced-in backyards. These homes usually sell for $350,000 and $500,000. “Most of the time, the market moves quickly. Hillsborough is a popular neighborhood in the city, so if things are priced right, it will sell fast,” Briggs says. The neighborhood’s CAP Index Crime Score is 2 out of 10, which ranks lower than the national average of 4 out of 10.Days at Hillsborough Park and teeing it up near home
At the center of the neighborhood is Hillsborough Park, a 22-acre green space used for community gatherings and outdoor recreation. While the park hosts most of the neighborhood events, residents use the paved walking trail around the exterior, and children head to the playground. The park is home to the newest sprayground in the city, and the 2,000-square-foot splash pad features 14 different water features. Golfers can choose between two nearby courses. Champions Run Club is a private facility that offers golf and social memberships, including access to the racquet club and pool facilities. Eagle Run is a public track with two 9-hole courses. Standing Bear Lake is less than 2 miles north, and the lake and surrounding park are popular destinations featuring fishing, no-wake boating and 3.3 miles worth of hiking and biking trails. "Standing Bear Lake is just steps from Hillsborugh," says Sandy Beck, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Ambassador Real Estate, who has sold in the area. "The lake was drained two years ago and refilled. There is a bridge that takes you right over the water and is a great spot for fishing."Nearby neighborhood schools in OPS
School-aged children will attend Omaha Public Schools (OPS), which grades a B-minus on Niche. While a child’s address will determine its zoned schools, the district allows students to apply and get permission to attend any other OPS school. Hillsborough students attend Fullerton Magnet Elementary, Alice Buffett Middle School and Westview High School. The elementary and middle schools earn a C-plus from Niche, while the high school is not yet rated. Westview High opened in 2022 and offers pathway academies in business, health sciences, sustainability and education in addition to its core classes.Multiple yearly events
The Hillsborough Association of Land Owners has multiple events for the community scattered throughout the year. Maybe its most popular event is its annual Hills“BOO”rough Spooktacular, which takes place at Hillsborough Park around Halloween. Families head to the event to pick up their pumpkins, take hayrides and enjoy other fun games and food. Other seasonal events include an Egg Hunt in the spring, an Independence Day Celebration and Movies in the Park each fall. The association also hosts other smaller events like cleanups and garage sales.Getting around Omaha
Hillsborough is right along Nebraska Highway 64, which is how commuters get the 12 miles east into downtown and to Interstate 680. I-680 is how residents reach the 17 miles to Omaha Eppley Airfield, the city’s airport. It’s about 6 miles east of the closest hospital facility, CHI Health Lakeside.Conveniently located shopping centers and restaurants
Residents can knock out weekend errands by heading to the Eagle Run Shopping Center, which is within walking distance for some. The shopping center is home to a Baker’s for groceries, but other popular big box stores like Kohl’s, HomeGoods and Target call it home. Wave Bistro is a family-owned Asian infusion restaurant that opened in 2005, while Blue Sushi is another popular spot, with one of its three Omaha locations in Hillsborough. “The staff and owners of local restaurants are all super friendly. They build relationships with their regulars, so there is some familiarity when you go out to eat,” Briggs says.Severe weather in Nebraska
Living in Nebraska does put homebuyers at risk of extreme weather, such as severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and flooding. North 138th Street and the western edge of the park have an increased risk of flooding. Some national lenders require flood insurance when properties are in an increased flood zones.
