Kids can walk to school in Millard Highlands

Millard Highlands is a family friendly neighborhood in southwest Omaha. Its winding roads and cul-de-sacs surround Norman Rockwell Elementary, which is part of the highly rated Millard Public Schools system. “Most people move to the neighborhood so their kids can be in that district, and walk to the elementary school,” says Anne Conway, an associate broker with Better Homes & Gardens Real Estate who has sold several houses in the area. The neighborhood is also home to the Millard Avenue shopping corridor, where cozy diners sit near lively mini golf courses. “It’s got a great location,” Conway says. “Grocery stores, places to hike and Interstate 80 are all within 5 miles.”

Homes can sell for less than the Omaha median

Split-level, bi-level and ranch-style homes dot Millard Highlands’ sidewalk-lined streets. Shrubs and oak trees often cover lawns, with the median lot size at around 7,800 square feet. Houses typically have three to five bedrooms and garages. Prices can range from about $200,000 to around $400,000, depending on a house’s size and condition. The median single-family home price is approximately $269,000, less than Omaha’s median of $300,000. “Some of these houses are priced lower because they were built in the 1960s and ‘70s and may need new appliances and other updates,” Conway says.

Millard Public Schools receive high ratings

The Millard Public Schools district earns an A grade from Niche. Kids can attend Norman Rockwell Elementary and Millard Central Middle, both of which receive Bs. They may continue to B-plus-rated Millard South High, where Advanced Placement classes include environmental science, European history and German. The elementary school is tucked between residential streets on 140th Avenue, while the middle and high schools are within 2 miles of the neighborhood.

Diners and dive bars are in the Millard Avenue shopping corridor

Several strip malls make up the Millard Avenue shopping corridor in the northern part of the neighborhood. “There aren’t any huge big-box stores, but it’s a good area to run errands or go out to dinner,” Conway says. The corridor has dollar stores, auto repair shops and locally owned restaurants, including Shirley’s Diner, known for its comfort food classics like chicken-fried steak and corn-fried catfish. TVs and neon beer signage decorate the walls of Bogie's-West, where people often enjoy football games and live music. A Hy-Vee grocery store and Methodist Urgent Care are on the neighborhood's west side. CHI Health Lakeside, the closest hospital, is about 5 miles away.

Parks, mini golf courses and waterfront hiking trails are in the area

Millard Highlands Park is the elementary school’s green space, which is also open to the public. Walking paths stretch around soccer fields and a baseball diamond, often used for youth sports. Kids run around the playgrounds during recess and when school is out. The neighborhood’s strip malls are also home to a few entertainment centers, including Boulder Creek Park Amusement Park, which has mini golf courses, batting cages and a rock climbing wall. People can race go-karts and play laser tag at The Amazing Pizza Machine, an arcade with over 170 games and attractions. Chalco Hills Recreation Area on Wehrspann Lake is another popular recreation spot, about 3 miles south. Boat launches and fishing spots surround the waterway, but the area is best known for its hiking trails. “It’s basically a guarantee that you’ll see deer or turkey while you’re out there,” Conway says.

Low traffic makes walking to school easy for kids

Millard Highlands is located just west of I-80. The highway takes drivers to downtown Omaha and Eppley Airfield, both less than 18 miles away. Despite this highway access, the neighborhood’s residential streets are typically quiet. “There’s really no through traffic, so kids don’t deal with a lot of cars when they walk to school,” Conway says. Metro Transit also provides bus routes around the city.
