Former Omaha suburb lives on in Old Millard East
For nearly a century, Millard was an established town about 15 miles southwest of Omaha. Though the smaller city was annexed by Omaha in 1971, its original downtown lives on in the Old Millard East neighborhood. “Millard was the place to be in the ’60s and ’70s. It was the suburb where everybody went to get away from downtown Omaha,” says Charlie Sutton, a 32-year Omaha resident and Realtor at BHHS Ambassador Real Estate. That suburban charm is still intact in the neighborhood, which occupies the area around the intersection of Millard Avenue and L Street. Tranquil, tree-lined residential streets are within walking distance of neighborhood schools. “Because of the home sizes and great schools, it’s an excellent place for families to find their first home,” Sutton says.

The high school’s Early College Program allows students to obtain an associate degree from Metropolitan Community College while earning their diploma.

Playing ball at Andersen Park
The baseball fields are the star attraction at Andersen Park in the neighborhood’s southwestern corner. The playground and picnic shelter make good vantage points for the ball games, and the park is steps away from pubs and restaurants in the old downtown. Near L Street, Oaks Park features basketball courts, shaded picnic areas and a centrally located playground. Families can hit the lanes for tenpin bowling at Western Bowl, about a half-mile down the street from Oaks Park.

Single-family homes bordered by stately trees
The neighborhood’s residential property mix is a blend of single-family homes, apartments and condos. Apartment buildings and multifamily units occupy the area near the L Street Marketplace. Streets in the central portion of the neighborhood are bordered by paved sidewalks and rows of stately mature trees, and most properties include driveways and small patches of lawn. When homes enter the market, they’re usually snapped up within 14 days, about one-third the national average. Raised ranch-style and split-level homes with attached garages typically sell for $200,000 to $350,000. Tornado watches and warnings are common in Omaha, so buyers should look for homes with sturdy basements.

Millard Days festival takes place in August
For six days every August, Andersen Park transforms into a bustling carnival for the Millard Days celebration. Locals gather to decorate the parade floats on Friday evening, often meeting for cold brews in the beer garden afterward. The parade rolls through town on Saturday morning, and the festivities conclude with a Family Fun Day on Sunday.
