Skylark-Cryer
Suburban Neighborhood in Omaha, Nebraska
Douglas County 68144
Renovated midcentury homes
Tucked among a canopy of greenery and situated on spacious grassy lots are various non-HOA properties that typically reflect midcentury architectural trends. Ranch-style dwellings and classic split-levels make up most housing units that line curving streets. Although rarer, the community is also home to some Colonial Revivals and storybook Tudor Revivals. Most of these homes feature attached garages. "Homeowners in Skylark-Cryer are very house-proud, and updating their homes is a labor of love," says Gillian Hanus, a Realtor with Nebraska Realty who has experience throughout Omaha. "Because of that, homes on the market often move within 24 hours." She adds, "Another thing that is distinctive is the number of homes here that are exceptionally well-maintained." Many of the properties that come on the market are already updated or fully renovated. Prices largely depend on the lot and house size; they range from about $300,000 to just upward of $600,000.A community pool and nearby recreational fun
When summer rolls around, Skylark-Cryer residents head in droves to the local outdoor pool. "We're very lucky to have Cryer Community Pool," Hanus says. "Not every neighborhood has a community pool, and it really helps give kids something fun to do during the summer." It's here that the annual Fourth of July parade ends and the block party begins. Locals spend the morning feasting on classic summer food and playing games. For other recreational fun, people here can head to the nearby Prairie Lane Park to practice their swing on the baseball field or take a stab at pickleball. Also nearby is the Chalco Hills Recreation Area, which is less than 10 miles away. Anglers head to the lake to catch species like Blue Gill while hikers make their way through trails that circle the water. Golfers can purchase a membership at the Happy Hollow Club, a space just east of the community.Omaha Public Schools serving Skylark-Cryer
Children can enroll in Omaha Public Schools. Students can start off at Crestridge Magnet Center, which receives a C-plus rating on Niche. It is known for its Spanish Dual Language Program and award-winning Nature Explore Classroom. Students can then continue on to C-rated Beveridge Magnet Middle School, which emphasizes the arts and offers an array of extracurriculars, including the Sign Language Club. To finish their schooling, children here can attend B-minus-rated Burke High School. Starting sophomore year, students choose from one of three specialty academies – marketing, business and analytics, air and space and communications – that encourage entrepreneurship and career exploration.Commute to downtown Omaha, nearby employers and more
Skylark-Cryer is conveniently less than 15 miles from downtown Omaha, which locals can get to by taking Interstate 80. They can take that same route to nearby major employers like the University of Nebraska and the University of Nebraska Medical Center, which are just about 10 miles away. Another employer that's just a short drive away is Fiserv Inc., which is approximately 4.5 miles away via Pacific Street, but the community is also home to smaller offices like Action Insurance. Locals here are also conveniently just about 13 miles from the Eppley Airfield, which they can get to by taking U.S. Route 6. While many people drive, they can also take the Metro.Brother Sebastian's Steakhouse & Winery and other local establishments
For food out, Hanus recommends Shucks Fish House & Oyster Bar. "Seafoodies love this place. It's small, but people rave about it," says Hanus. "And we're so lucky that it's actually walkable for most of us." This establishment, along with many others, is in the commercial corridor that takes up a slice of the neighborhood's northwestern section. It's home to the award-winning Brother Sebastian's Steakhouse & Winery. Here, patrons immerse themselves in an environment modeled after some of California's Spanish monasteries. Many people especially enjoy the intimate nature of booth seating that is tucked next to a wall of books and the friendly servers dressed as monks. Those craving flavorful chapli kababs take a seat at Shahen Afghan Restaurant. The adjoining Shahen Supermarket is where locals can pick up groceries, but they can also head to a nearby Trader Joe's location. Shopping enthusiasts here won't be far from hot spots like the Westwood Plaza and Bel Air Plaza.
