Downsizers and families move to Walnut Grove
Walnut Grove's well-maintained homes and location near several well-rated Millard Public Schools make it a top choice for downsizers and families. Nebraska Realty Realtor Kathy Harris and her husband were looking for exactly those qualities when they moved to the west Omaha community in 2023. “We wanted to live in a house where the lawn wouldn’t be such a hassle to keep up with,” she says. “But we also wanted to be in a neighborhood that our grandkids would want to visit.” The neighborhood is home to several green spaces, including Walnut Grove Park, where mature trees shade walking paths and fishing ponds. Spending time with neighbors at the park is one reason the community is so close-knit. “I think I know everyone who lives here because we’re all very social,” Harris says. “If someone sees me unloading groceries from my trunk, they walk over, and we wind up talking forever.”

Lot sizes tend to be smaller than the Omaha median
Split-level, bi-level and New Traditional homes built between the 1960s and 2010s dot Walnut Grove’s winding roads and cul-de-sacs. The median lot size is about 5,700 square feet, which is less than Omaha's median of nearly 8,000 square feet. Most houses have three to five bedrooms and attached garages. Prices typically range from about $220,000 to around $525,000, depending on the house’s age, size and condition. The neighborhood is also home to the Walnut Grove Adult Living Community, a 55+ apartment complex.

Walnut Grove Park offers trails, fishing and wide-open green space
Locals consider Walnut Grove Park to be a hidden gem in Omaha. “I only ever see people who live in the neighborhood when I’m there,” Harris says. “We’re all nervous that everybody else in the city is going to figure out how great it is.” Neighbors regularly get together to enjoy the park’s trails, pond and wide-open green space. “We have a group of ladies who go walking every day and men who will hang out and fish, and then there’s usually a group of kids playing soccer somewhere,” Harris says. The neighborhood is also home to Englewood Park, which has a playground, a basketball court and tennis courts. Hiking trails, a fishing dock and a boat ramp are at Zorinsky Lake Park, about 3 miles west.

Interstate 80 can get traffic-heavy
Walnut Grove is a car-dependent community a few miles west of Interstate 80. A 15-mile drive east on the highway reaches Downtown Omaha. Traffic may back up as people commute to and from major employers, like Creighton University and the University of Nebraska Medical Center. “During rush hour, it can take 40 minutes to get downtown,” Harris says. “But because some kids walk to school here, parents heading in that direction can avoid the carpool line and leave for work a bit earlier.” Omaha Metro Transit provides bus routes downtown, and I-80 also leads to Eppley Airfield, less than 18 miles east.
