Westgate
Suburban Neighborhood in Omaha, Nebraska
Douglas County 68124
Midcentury homes under old-growth trees
Tall, old-growth trees shade steep, winding streets with tight sidewalks. Perched on rectangular lots are a collection of ranch homes and split-levels with garages. Prices range around $250,000 for a four-bedroom ranch, while a three-bedroom split level will cost more than $315,000. “It’s a great neighborhood for first-time buyers. Most homes are midcentury designed, and you get a decent-sized lot. I just sold a home here, and there was much interest in it,” Vandeveer says. The first inclusive playground in Omaha
Westgate is home to Omaha’s first-ever inclusive park, Pipal Park. Constructed in the 1980s, the park is being renovated to update its play equipment, which includes a barrier-free playground. The 15-acre green space has a picnic area and a water feature. A popular place in the summer is the Westgate Pool, which families can join via a membership. The pool is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day and has a youth swim team. The neighborhood has a youth baseball league that plays at the Westgate Ball Park and hosts youth baseball tournaments.Learning in the A-rated Westside Community Schools
Westgate’s youngest residents are districted for the Westside Community Schools, which scores an A on Niche, is ranked as the third-best district in Nebraska on the site and serves a little more than 6,000 students. Students begin their educational journey by walking to the neighborhood’s Westgate Elementary, which scores a B-minus, before advancing to the A-rated Westside Middle and earning their diplomas from Westside High School. Westside High scores an A and offers many unique programs, including partnering with Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo, allowing students to take classes in the zoo’s zoology academy.Events with the Westgate Neighborhood Association
The Westgate Neighborhood Association's mission is to advocate for the development of the neighborhood, but it also hosts a handful of events for the community each year. Each spring, the entire city has a spring cleanup, in which Westgate participates. Other events include Trunk or Treat, Summer Outdoor Movie Night and awards the yard of the month.Right along Interstate 80
The southern end of Westgate is Interstate 80, which runs from Teaneck, New Jersey to San Francisco, Calif. “Some houses are across the street from the soundproof wall on the interstate. However, it remains pretty quiet, and traffic is limited because there is only one throughway in the neighborhood,” Vandeveer says. Commuters can also hop aboard the Omaha Metro public bus and use the Route 15 – Center Street line to get around town.Browsing the Fedrick Square Shopping Center
On the western edge of the neighbors can visit the Fredrick Square Shopping Center, where they can head to the locally owned Mangelsen’s, a craft store that offers home goods and other knickknacks and have breakfast or lunch at Farm Haus. A bit further west on Center Street, locals can grab their groceries from Hy-Vee. Westgate is a tad more than 2 miles from Aksarben Village and has multiple locally owned stores, restaurants and office space. The Village shops range from clothing stores, like A Priori, to books at the Book Nook and provisions from Spirit World. For a bite to eat, Inner Rail is a food hall with nine vendors surrounding a central bar.Proximity to a hospital and two universities
Westgate is within 5 miles of the Creighton University Medical Center-Bergan Mercy, University of Nebraska Omaha in the College of St. Mary. The hospital is a Level I Trauma Center and has 397 beds. The University of Nebraska Omaha is a four-year public university offering bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees across 200 programs of study. The College of Saint Mary is a small, four-year women’s college that offers undergraduate and graduate programs.
