Ontario is a growing lakefront community outside of Rochester
Situated on the banks of its namesake lake, Ontario began as a small farming community that has grown into a quiet suburb of Rochester. “It’s a lower cost of living than most metropolitan areas in Rochester as far as taxes,” says Luke Cino, a local broker and CEO of Cornerstone Realty Associates, who grew up in Ontario. “There’s a power plant on Lake Ontario and they subsidize taxes a little bit for the school system.” The R.E. Ginna Clean Energy Center power plant is a source of employment for some, as is another industrial center around Dean Parkway. Aside from these industrial facilities, the majority of Ontario is undeveloped or residential, offering spacious lots and a wealth of community-oriented programs at Casey Park.

A variety of home styles, often with large lots
Residential development in Ontario began with farmhouses and cottages in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, picking up in the latter half of the 20th century. Home styles mostly include Colonial Revivial-style, ranch-style and bi-level properties, along with more New Traditional homes popping up in recent years. Properties are scattered throughout the community, often on full-acre or multiacre forested lots, though there are also pockets of suburban-style development with quarter-acre parcels. Prices generally range from $100,000 to $550,000, depending on age, condition and lot size. Newer estate-sized homes or properties near the Lake Ontario waterfront can range from $600,000 to $880,000. There is some variation in the weather between Ontario’s north and south sides, bisected by state Route 104. This can sometimes play a role in a homebuyer’s decision, especially when it comes to winter weather. “You get some differentiation from properties that are along the lakeshore compared to properties south of 104,” Cino explains. “The lake stays warmer for a longer period of time from fall into early winter, so they might not get snow when we get snow south of 104.”

Historic sites and small events at Heritage Square Museum
Some of the oldest buildings from Ontario’s early days are preserved within Heritage Square Museum, a small historic site that includes the old brick schoolhouse, the blacksmith shop and an ore miner’s residence. The site is commonly visited for school field trips and also hosts small events throughout the year, such as Halloween Happenings, a trick-or-treating get-together with cider and photo opportunities.
Businesses and restaurants found along State Route 104
Small shops, auto shops and chain retailers like Walgreens and Tops Friendly Markets line state Route 104. Dining options include a mix of fast-food spots like McDonald’s and locally owned businesses like Konstantinou’s Restaurant, which has been serving pizza and American fare for over 40 years. Heintzelman’s BBQ Pit is another staple, offering smoked meats and a Friday fish fry special.
