Resort-style living with clubhouse amenities and vacation homes

It's not a cliché to say life is like a vacation in Spanish Cove. "We have so many activities, and you can get involved in as many or as few as you like," says Realtor Becky Pangallo with Coldwell Banker Coastal Realty. Pangallo has lived in Spanish Cove for 19 years. Activities range from fishing and kayaking on Perdido Bay to concerts and line dancing at the Cove Clubhouse. The resort-style community isn't just for vacationers, either. "I'd say about 70 percent of residents are full-time, and only 30 percent are people with second homes," Pangallo says. Spanish Cove is also less than 20 miles from Pensacola, influencing much of the lifestyle. "We're close to Naval Air Station Pensacola, so there's a lot of retired military here and they have access to the commissary and Naval Hospital," Pangallo says. "Pensacola is where we all go shopping; there's no grocery tax."

Resort-style homes on small lots with low HOA fees

Developed between the 1980s and 2010s, Spanish Cove offers budget-friendly homes with a resort-style feel and a "very diverse" housing inventory, Pangallo says. Most homes here are set on small, neat lots, and many provide backyard storage. A few homes also sit directly on Perdido Bay. Houses can sell from about $150,000 to nearly $395,000, largely depending on size and proximity to the water. Buyers can also find manufactured homes and RV lots from about $60,000 to $250,000, depending on age and condition. Laundry facilities are available in Land Harbor, the RV section of the community. Spanish Cove homes usually have an HOA fee of around $75, contributing to community maintenance and events. "Taxes are very reasonable here, too," Pangallo says. "Since we're not incorporated, we only have to pay county tax, so it's much lower."

There is a risk of coastal flooding and damage from seasonal hurricanes. Residents should purchase adequate homeowners' insurance and follow county evacuation routes.

Waterfront trails, fishing piers and a private beach for residents

Set on the shores of Perdido Bay, many residents enjoy boating, fishing and paddling here. The community offers an Olympic-sized pool, a fishing pier stretching over the water and a gazebo for sunset watching. There's also a private beach for residents, where kayaks and paddleboards are launched. Near the Cove Clubhouse are tennis courts, playgrounds, a fitness center and a community garden. Pangallo and other residents enjoy walking, as scenic trails offer glimpses of the local wildlife.
More recreation is available in Lillian. Those who don't have private docks may take their boat out at the Lillian Boat Launch on South Seventh Street. The Lillian Recreational Park is around a five-minute drive, offering a walking track, playground and fenced dog park. Events are typically hosted here, including Art and Craft Markets showcasing local vendors, and a holiday light display that attracts visitors from across the area. Spanish Cove is also close to the Lillian Swamp Complex, where there are walking trails meandering through pine wetlands and around small ponds. In addition to the hiking and wildlife-viewing offered by the complex, hunting for waterfowl is another popular pastime. The Gulf Coast beaches are around 20 miles away, offering white sugar beaches and emerald waters.

Events at the Cove Clubhouse, with local eateries nearby

Spanish Cove is primarily residential, but the Cove Clubhouse features community events like bingo, line dancing, potlucks, parties and live music. Nearby Lillian has a few small businesses, restaurants and a bait and tackle shop. The eateries in town act as local watering holes, such as Reileigh's Daybreak Cafe. The homey spot offers comfort food, breakfast platters and lots of country music. As Pangallo mentions, most residents head to Pensacola for more amenities. The city offers big box stores and numerous shopping centers, like Cordova Mall. Foley, about 15 miles away, and Orange Beach, about 20 miles away, offer even more retail, dining and entertainment options.

Getting around with golf carts and Highway 98

Many residents use golf carts to zip from home to the clubhouse or beach to get around the area. Spanish Cove is just south of U.S. Highway 98, which connects car-dependent residents to surrounding communities. Highway 98 brings residents to Foley, 15 miles west, home to Baldwin Health Hospital. It also brings residents 15 miles east to Pensacola, which is home to Baptist Hospital and Pensacola International Airport. Residents can also use the boat launch on South Seventh Street to get onto Perdido Bay. From there, numerous public marinas allow residents to dock and explore the Gulf Coast.

Spanish Cove kids attend school with high ratings

Baldwin County Public Schools serves over 30,000 students and earns an A-minus rating from Niche. "We don't have a lot of school-aged children here, but they go to school in Elberta, the next town over," Pangallo says. Kids in Spanish Cove may attend A-minus-rated Elberta Elementary, before attending A-minus-rated Elberta Middle and B-plus-rated Elberta High. Coastal College offers career and technical education pathways, including aviation, computer animation and drafting.
