Common home styles here include Cape Cods and ranch-style homes from the mid- to late-1900s, townhouses and newly constructed colonial revivals. Most houses feature driveways, attached garages and modest yards. Homes tend to stay on the market for just over a month and sell for a median of $420,000, which is about the same as the state and national median. The Orange Lake Homeowners’ Association has voluntary membership with dues around $50 annually.
Commuting via interstate, plane or train
Though public transit options are nearby, Orange Lake itself is car-dependent. Commuters can travel 50 miles south on Interstate 87 to New York City and 40 miles east on Interstate 84 to Connecticut. New York Stewart International Airport is just south of the community. In neighboring Newburgh, a ferry runs across the Hudson River to Beacon Train Station, which offers service to Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan in about two hours. Montefiore St. Luke's Cornwall is the closest hospital, located 5 miles east.
Boating and fishing on Orange Lake
Orange Lake serves as the main outdoor attraction, providing bass fishing and a launch ramp for boating. Residents are allowed to swim in the lake, but there aren’t any public beaches available. Along Lakeside Road, Ice Time Sports Complex is a popular rink for hockey and figure skating. And just 5 miles east, locals can take a boat in the Hudson River, which extends 315 miles through the state and out to the Atlantic Ocean.

Annual boat parade, parties at Lake View House
The hamlet holds an annual Kick-Off-the-Summer Party and a Christmas Party at Lakeview House. To celebrate Independence Day, there’s a boat parade on Orange Lake and a fireworks display over the water. The Orange Lake Homeowner’s Association also holds a general community meeting every May. There are more events at Downing Park in nearby Newburgh, including their Arts in the Park and Folk in the Park festivals.
Valley Central School District, nearby community college
Students are served by the Valley Central School District, which gets a B-plus from Niche. Around 4,200 students attend four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. Orange County Community College also has a campus 5 miles east in Newburgh.

Along the waterfront, Lakeview House is a local staple with casual gourmet dining since 1899. While there aren’t any shopping centers in Orange Lake, Newburgh Towne Center, less than a mile east, includes a Stop & Shop. The Newburgh Mall offers nearly 50 additional stores. “Broadway in Newburgh also has a lot of local restaurants,” adds Scarano.

According to The New York State Division of Criminal Justice’s Uniform Crime Report, Newburgh's violent crime increased by 13% and property crime increased by around 16% from 2022 to 2023. Comparing data from the past five years, total crime in the area decreased around 22%.
Flood risks here are minimal, with the biggest threat being to homes closest to Orange Lake. The region also gets around 9 to 10 inches of snow each year.
