Orland is a small, rural town along Interstate 5, about 100 miles north of Sacramento. “It’s where people come to be out in the country and the type of town where it’s a big deal to have a bowling alley,” says Heather Boer of HB Ranch and Home Properties, who has over 20 years of experience in the area. “We’re really close to major farms with pastures, almond farming and row crops.” Orland is known for its honey production; dubbed the “Queen Bee Capital of North America,” Orland produces over 200,000 queen honeybees per year. The town is rural by nature, but its position along Interstate 5 and Highway 32 allows its 8,200 residents to easily access larger surrounding cities.

Single-family homes near farms
The median price for a single-family home in Orland is $400,000; prices depend largely on the age and condition of the home. Many homes on the northern edge of town were built in the 21st century and cost more, while homes near East Walker Street on the city’s main drag are smaller builds from the 1950s and 60s. Houses sit on quiet, gridded streets with wide sidewalks and yards. Most properties have private driveways and attached garages, and a handful of manufactured homes are on the city’s west end.

Swimming at Black Butte Lake
Lely Park and Vinsonhaler Park are Orland’s two major recreation areas. Both have large open green spaces, baseball diamonds and tennis courts, and Vinsonhaler Park is home to the Orland Public Swimming Pool. Black Butte Lake is a major recreation area 8 miles west of town for boating, fishing and water skiing; it also has 40 miles of shoreline for camping and picnicking. Each May, the Glenn County Fair comes to Orland, featuring a demolition derby, livestock shows and live music. “The fair is awesome because of our agricultural roots,” says Boer. “There’s always kids that are really proud to show off for their farm.” Orland’s Avenue of Lights is a drive-through event showing off the town’s holiday spirit.
