Locals have ample shopping and dining options
The nearby Colonial Plaza is a sprawling shopping center anchored by a Sprouts Farmers Market. Locals can also shop for groceries inside the neighborhood at Publix Super Market on Colonial Drive. Adjacent is The Plaza Live, a historic landmark that began as the city's first two-screen movie theater and is now a musical venue central to the neighborhood's burgeoning nightlife.Closer to home are dining spots that have made the area a hip place to live. "You're within walking distance of some of the best dining in Orlando," says Poritzky. A concentration of various Asian-style eateries known locally as Little Saigon is at the intersection of Colonial Drive and Mills Avenue. Part of the popular Mills 50 District that stretches into Colonialtown North, Little Saigon features some of the newest and trendiest spots for locals. Haan Coffee serves up Korean-inspired brews, and the Filipino-style treats at Sampaguita Ice Cream & Bakeshop draw a crowd. "Every time I drive by there, there's a line out the door," says Poritzky. On the other side of the neighborhood are popular restaurants Beefy King, a neighborhood institution known for its beef sandwiches, and Se7enBites, which features down-home southern favorites.
A convenient place to live in the city center
Commuters find bus stops lined down Mills Avenue and Colonial Drive. Locals hear the roaring of planes flying overhead in and out of Orlando Executive Airport. The neighborhood's north side is bordered by Colonial Drive, which provides direct access to the Central Business District. "If you work downtown but don't want to live there, Colonialtown South is a great option," says Poritzky.Events in and around the community
Colonialtown South participates in National Night Out, an event promoting neighborhood safety while building police-community relationships. Downtown Orlando, just over a mile away, also features several cultural attractions, including the Orange County Regional History Center and the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.Green spaces and community centers offer recreation
For those who prefer to spend their days outdoors, Hampton Park is an open green space planted between homes. Festival Park sits behind Colonial Plaza. Among its amenities are a skate park, volleyball courts, and a community garden. Additional activity takes place at the Downtown Orlando YMCA Family Center, which has served the community from its Mills Avenue location since the 1960s. Colonialtown Neighborhood Center has a swimming pool, and children can attend afterschool and summer camps.Historic homes and newer townhouses
One of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, Colonialtown South was around long before the contemporary attractions its locals have quick and easy access to today. Its residential streets, many of which feature their original architecture, are home to a collection of established housing highlighted by colorful bungalows, Mediterranean homes and cozy frame houses. "They started building homes around 1910, and the neighborhood was developed between 1910 and 1950," says Poritzky. Single-family homes typically list between $350,000 and $625,000. The neighborhood's newest construction consists of large townhouses that can list for upwards of $600,000.Portions of Colonialtown South are often affected by flooding, and the city is working on drainage improvement projects in the surrounding area. Some locals may occasionally spot coyotes, as sightings have increased in downtown neighborhoods.
Learning at Lake Como School and Edgewater High
Kindergarteners to eighth graders attend Lake Como School, which has a B grade from Niche. Graduates will likely attend Edgewater High which receives a B-plus from Niche. The high school magnet program offers students industry certifications in engineering, science and technology.
