Recent revitalization in the west Orland urban neighborhood
Parramore emerged in the 1880s as Orlando’s first African-American neighborhood, and by the 20th century, it was a thriving economic and entertainment hub. Iconic jazz musicians would perform at the South Street Casino and sleep next door at the Wells’ Built Hotel. Parramore Avenue was a bubbling Main Street district with local restaurants and shops brimming with regulars. In the 1950s, the construction of Interstate 4 severed Parramore from the central business district, demolishing hundreds of neighborhood homes and businesses in its path. For decades, it seemed like Parramore’s rich history would be forgotten. However, community leaders and neighborhood volunteers came together to create the Parramore Comprehensive Neighborhood Plan – an ongoing project approved by city officials in 2015. Intended to revitalize the area without stripping away its history, the Neighborhood Plan has already brought with it a new academic center, two transit lines and mixed-income apartments. It also helped Parramore earn its designation as an Orlando Main Street District, which brings additional funding for new and old businesses. Most future developments revolve around the Kia Center – home of the NBA’s Orlando Magic. In 2024, the city approved plans to construct a $500 million entertainment complex in Parramore directly across from the Kia Center. Once complete, the mixed-use project will feature a major hotel and retail space and create over 3,400 new jobs. “Great things are beginning to happen, and we’ve been promised great things for a long time - but this time, we’re getting development, and it’s the right kind of development,” says Aida Martin. Owner of Midtown Realty of Orlando and local resident since 1979, Martin says, “I’ll give the city a lot of credit; it has put a lot of thought into the latest development. We’ve had so many false starts in the past, but I think the momentum is here.”

Modest bungalows and contemporary craftsman homes
Modest beach bungalows, shotgun houses and boxy multi-family units are packed on rectangular city blocks around Parramore. These properties typically date back to the 1920s and '30s. Since the revitalization efforts began, developers have been buying the older, abandoned homes to flip them into contemporary craftsmans. "The homes I was selling for $35,000 not long ago are going for $200,000 now," Martin says. "You're no longer going to find anything under $150,000, and I would say the general range is $175,000 to $275,000." Some contemporary townhomes list for around $1 million next to Inter & Co Stadium. The city also added new subsidized housing and mixed-income apartments. "If you feel for people, then go build them something nicer," says Martin, who was instrumental in developing the City View Apartments. "From working with people in Parramore, they want better. Again, I'll give the city credit. They came in and built better housing for residents. To me, that's progress."

Walk to corner markets or bike to Downtown Orlando
Many Parramore residents are reliant on public transit, but for a while, Orlando's bus rapid transit system didn't stop anywhere near the neighborhood. However, in 2016 and 2018, the city added two new LYMMO lines connecting Parramore to the Central Business District and SunRail stations. Drivers can easily access Interstate 4 or State Road 408 from the neighborhood's east side.

The Wells' Built Hotel is now a museum
A local awareness campaign and neighborhood fundraising efforts saved the historic Wells' Built Hotel from demolition in the 1990s. It's since been added to the National Register of Historic Places and converted into a two-story museum showcasing Orlando's African American community and Civil Rights memorabilia. A paved walking trail loops around Z L Riley Park's new canopy-covered playground and pagoda. Kids walk to the John H. Jackson Neighborhood Center for free after-school programs and summer camps.
