Osceola is a small town within commuting distance of the Twin Cities

Osceola is a small village and satellite suburb of the Twin Cities, situated on the Wisconsin side of the St. Croix River at the Minnesota border. Its geography and location have shaped much of its history, economy, and community life, tying it both to river transport in the 19th century and to the Twin Cities metro area today. Founded as a timber hub, the area transitioned to an agricultural economy over the following decades. Today, locals are more likely to commute to St. Paul or work at the Osceola Medical Center — the only hospital in the area — than they are to work in lumber or farming, though agriculture is still a significant part of the local economy. “It’s small-town living close to the Twin Cities,” says real estate agent Nicole Froehlich of Compass Realty Group, who has lived in the area for over 25 years. “That’s the heart of the appeal. There are lots of hiking trails and outdoor opportunities, no traffic, and you can get to the city without too much trouble.”

A combination of early and midcentury homes and modern builds

Osceola’s housing market includes a selection of early-20th-century homes near the center of town, along with a larger selection of midcentury ranch-style homes and split-levels. There’s also a growing number of more modern properties in subdivisions outside the city limits. While homes near downtown feature modest yards and mature trees, properties further out often offer a bit more space — even a few acres — and may butt up against surrounding farms or forests. Homes in the area generally sell for between $185,000 and $430,000, but luxury properties and farms can list for considerably more.

Hiking along the St. Croix River and Cascade Falls

Recreational offerings center around the scenic St. Croix River, which runs along Osceola’s west side. Boating, tubing, fishing and ice fishing are all popular pastimes in town. Multiple hiking trails run along the river, featuring excellent views. The most popular of these is probably the Falls Bluff Loop, which starts in town and passes Cascade Falls, a 25-foot waterfall on Osceola Creek. “Cascade Falls is really beautiful, it’s kind of the town landmark,” says Froehlich. “There are also some really great parks just north of town, like Osceola Bedrock Glades State Natural Area. Really good hiking.” Osceola Creek runs through Schillberg Park, which features walking trails.

Retail is centered around Osceola's small downtown

Shopping and dining center around a small downtown area located just north of the intersection of Osceola Road, Cascade Street and Osceola Creek. The area is home to a Dick’s Fresh Market and Ace Hardware, along with a few local boutiques and thrift shops. While most everyday necessities can be found in town, residents usually head to the Twin Cities for additional shopping needs. Highly rated eateries in the area include the longstanding Watershed Cafe, which overlooks the creek, and popular Chinese diner Lucky Panda. Downtown is also home to Osceola Lanes, a focal point of local entertainment.

The annual Wheels & Wings show draws crowds

Osceola is known for its annual Wheels & Wings show, which celebrates classic cars and planes and has been held every September at the local municipal airport for the last 44 years. The Osceola Community Fair, also held in September, features livestock shows, a parade, rides and live entertainment. There’s also a Friday farmer’s market held on River Street during summer months.

About 30 miles from St. Paul

Wisconsin’s Route 35 and Minnesota’s Route 95 connect Osceola to nearby towns and cities. It’s a little over 30 miles by car to North St. Paul, around 50 miles to Downtown Minneapolis, and a little more than that to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Osceola doesn’t have a mass transit system, so locals typically rely on cars to get around.
