Outer Oxnard neighborhood with community resources and Christmas spirit
Situated along US Highway 101, Nyeland Acres is on the cusp of Oxnard where the city gives way to agricultural areas. “It’s between the freeway and farmland, and it has gorgeous mountain views. And, of course, the weather’s fantastic,” says Supervisor Kelly Long, who represents Nyeland Acres on the County of Ventura Board of Supervisors. Although Nyeland Acres has been recognized by Ventura County as a disadvantaged community, residents of the neighborhood have pulled together with local nonprofits to bring significant improvements to the area, including programs at the community center and park. It’s also home to a major holiday attraction, a massive 10,000-pound Santa statue that’s believed to be the world’s largest.
Originally off the 101 in Carpinteria, this Santa statue now resides safely in Nyeland Acres.
Community spirit combines with holiday cheer
Driving into Nyeland Acres from the freeway, it’s impossible to miss the neighborhood’s most high-profile resident: a giant, smiling Santa Claus popping out of a chimney, waving at the passersby. But more than just a festive face along the highway, it also serves as the starting point for the Santa to the Sea half marathon, which winds through Oxnard to the coast. “It’s probably the best way to see the whole city in one go, plus it’s for a good cause,” Long adds. The race raises money for Christmas gifts, scholarships and food for underprivileged Ventura County residents. Other outreach programs include Nyeland Promise, a neighborhood nonprofit that seeks to support Nyeland Acres residents by providing services like internet access, a food pantry and safe transportation to schools.
Densely clustered ranch-style houses
The flat streets of Nyeland Acres are lined by narrow strips of sidewalks and colorful ranch-style homes. Palm trees dot the humble lawns, most of which are fenced in and have modest landscaping ranging from shrubbery to cacti. Some homes have garages or carports, but there’s plenty of room to park along the wide roads. Most residents in Nyeland Acres rent, and some investors looking to purchase multifamily housing units in the neighborhood will find that they can cost as much as $1.6 million. On the opposite end, undeveloped lots can sell for $240,000. The median single-family home, however, is priced at $830,000 and comes with three bedrooms and Spanish-style flairs like tiled roofs.
