Surfing and hiking on Pedro Point's natural areas
Outdoor activity is abundant in Pedro Point, with several beaches and natural areas nearby. Pacifica State Beach is just north of the community and is constantly full of beachgoers sunbathing and swimming. Surfing is popular here, with the water full of locals trying to catch the best waves. Other activities include kayaking and fishing. Pedro Point Headlands is a 255-acre natural area operated by the Pacifica Land Trust. The preserve has three miles of trails leading to sweeping views from the top of the hill. Visitors can spot gray whales migrating in the spring and fall, and wildflowers illuminate the landscape each spring. Devil’s Slide Trail is a paved 1.3-mile trail on a former section of Highway 1. The trail is available for walking, running, biking or horseback riding and offers scenic views of the rocky coastline. The nearby Pacifica Community Center has a skate park and playground.Wide range of California styles in Pacifica
There is a wide variety of housing styles in the neighborhood. “Pedro Point was built up by a variety of home builders through the years, and as each decade turned, a new style of house came in fashion,” says Christine Stahl, a Realtor with Re/Max Star Properties and longtime Pedro Point resident. “They come in any condition, too, from fixers and teardowns to turnkey.” Craftsman, Mediterranean and beach cottages are just some of the options in the neighborhood. There are plenty of custom homes as well. Homes on the hillier streets have to work with the terrain, resulting in steep walks up or down a driveway. However, the higher elevation offers views of the Pacific Ocean. “I wasn’t even looking to buy a home. I was showing it to someone else, and when I walked in, I walked straight to the deck and saw the best view of the ocean, and that was it,” says Stahl. Houses in Pedro Point typically range from $1.6 million to $2.9 million.Local shopping and dining on the California coast
While Pedro Point is a somewhat secluded community, some shopping and dining options are nearby. “There’s the coolest Taco Bell in the world right on the beach. It’s a Taco Bell Cantina, right on the sand,” says Kulda. “There are some great restaurants in the area.” The Taco Bell Cantina on Highway 1 overlooks the beach and is one of a limited number of locations that serves alcohol. Humble Sea Brewing Co. is a local outpost of a brewery based in Santa Cruz, known for its extensive beer menu and bar food. Sweet and savory crepes are available at High Tide Café & Creperie, serving breakfast and lunch. Groceries are available at the nearby Safeway or Grocery Outlet. Other stores in the area include a pet shop, hardware store and pharmacy.Friday night potlucks at the Pedro Point Firehouse
Locals gather at the Pedro Point Firehouse on Danmann Avenue for everything from meetings and parties to weddings. “The firehouse is a historical landmark that the Pedro Point Neighborhood Association maintains,” says Stahl. “It’s a popular local venue for neighbors to get together and do things like our Friday night potlucks. And there’s a playground attached to it as well,” she says. But the community’s sense of togetherness extends beyond gathering at the old firehouse. “We get together once a year and do a progressive dinner and there’s the neighborhood cookie exchange, too. There are all kinds of opportunities to mingle with our neighbors here. It’s a pretty special neighborhood,” Stahl says.Nearby schools for Pedro Point students
Students in Pedro Point might attend Cabrillo Elementary School, rated a B-plus by Niche, for kindergarten through eighth grade. Terra Nova High School gets an A-minus and serves approximately 750 students. The school boasts a 95% graduation rate, with 91% of students attending either a two-year or four-year college. Several SamTrans bus routes have stops at the nearby Linda Mar Park & Ride. These routes go throughout Pacifica and to the Daly City BART Station. Some of the local shops and restaurants are just a short walk away from the residential area, although it can be a hilly trek. The closest hospital is Mills-Peninsula Medical Center, about 12 miles away. San Francisco International Airport is about 14 miles from the neighborhood.Environmental risks on the coast of Pacifica
Because of the neighborhood’s location on the Pacific coast and near the San Andreas Fault, there is a risk of natural disasters like flooding, mudslides and earthquakes. The city of Pacifica has personnel prepared to respond to natural disasters and a hazard mitigation plan to reduce the damage from these disasters. City officials recommend that residents be prepared to take care of themselves for at least 72 hours after a disaster in case they become trapped. Buyers should also know that Pedro Point has a CAP Index crime score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4. It receives especially low scores for violent crimes.
