Resort-style community with ties to Old Hollywood
Set two miles southeast of downtown Palm Springs, Deepwell Estates has long been a retreat for Hollywood's elite. The likes of Liberace and Elizabeth Taylor once called this desert enclave home — particularly the sprawling custom-built estates along Manzanita Avenue and Calle Rolph. More than 400 homes here incorporate the retro, midcentury architecture and modernism that the city is known for. Although primarily residential, Deepwell Estates shares its landscape with boutique hotels and a few nostalgic dives like La Maison, Villa Marcus and Elmer's Restaurant. Realtor Niko Esposito of BD Homes, who has sold several homes in the area, says, “it’s a beautifully landscaped community with multiple pools, spas, pickleball and tennis courts. You’re conveniently close to cool spots like the Ace Hotel, Koffi and L’Horizon.”

Blending modernism with desert chic
Deepwell Estate’s palm-lined streets have names like Ocotillo, Mesquite and Sagebrush that reflect the desert landscape; the San Jacinto Mountains surround the community on every side. “Contrary to how many starlets and retirees live here, it isn’t gated, and it isn’t age-exclusive,” says David Whitworth, Palm Springs resident and Realtor with Compass. “It’s just a well-established area known for the architecture; one of the most famous in Palm Springs.” The 1950s and ‘60s midcentury ranch-style homes are characterized by flat roofs and neutral tones. Most homes have drought-resistant yards and backyard pools set on lots that range from 8,000 square feet to more than a quarter acre. Unrenovated three and four-bedroom homes range from $1.1 to $1.2 million, but renovations can drive prices up to around $1.8 to $2 million. Many of the larger, custom-built estates here were designed by midcentury modern architects Howard Lapham, Barry Berkus and Rick Harrison as early as the 1930s. These homes typically reach upward of $3 million. Additionally, ground-level contemporary condos and townhomes with Spanish-style details can be found in a small, gated section of the neighborhood called Deepwell Ranch. Built between the 1970s and '80s, these units feature two-bedroom options from $700,000 to $750,000; three-bedroom options reach up to $800,000 and $850,000. The monthly homeowner's association fee for all of Deepwell Estates is approximately $780.

For everyday essentials, Ralph's Fresh Fare at Smoke Tree Village shopping mall provides convenient grocery shopping. Townie Bagels Bakery Café offers freshly baked goods, while the Ace Hotel's Amigo Room crafts inventive cocktails in an intimate setting.
