Palmview is a popular destination for "winter Texans"
Just a few miles from the Mexican border, Palmview is a city in Hidalgo County that not only offers its 17,000 residents affordable homes on spacious lots and many things to do, but it also offers balmy weather — about 75 degrees — all year long. The warm winter weather is one of the main draws for scores of "winter Texans," people from across the country who arrive in Palmview once temperatures start to dip in their hometowns. While this might seem like a recipe for a tourist trap, Michael Leo, City Manager for Palmview and the Executive Director for Palmview Development District, says the winter visitors are very embedded in the community. “They attend city events and school events. They are very engaged when they're here."

Old and new homes throughout Palmview
Along Palmview’s residential streets, newcomers will find a mix of home styles, including contemporary Spanish Revival-style houses and traditional midcentury-era ranch-style houses. They sit on roomy lots, sometimes lined with low fences, and many homeowners landscape their front yards with local plant life. The streets are wide, and while sidewalks are scarce, there's plenty of room for afternoon walks or for kids to ride their bikes. Mature trees dot front yards, providing pops of greenery along the flat Texas horizon. Prices range from $180,000 to $268,000 for an average of 1,500 square feet.

A birder's paradise at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park
While green spaces are somewhat limited within the area, there are a few spots nearby that locals flock to when they want to get outside. One of those spots is Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park in nearby Mission. Described as “a birder’s paradise,” this vast park is home to over 300 species of birds, plus other wildlife like butterflies, javelinas and bobcats. Palmview gets unified at annual CommUNITY Fest
The city holds regular events during the Christmas season, including tree lighting and multiple toy drives. On the Fourth of July, there are fireworks, and during the spring, locals gather for CommUNITY Fest. "It's free admission, and we have music, entertainment, and carnival attractions for kids. It's really family-oriented," Leo says.
