Distinct California homes
Greenmeadow’s housing captures a distinct moment in the Californian architectural movement. The neighborhood is composed entirely of single-story, single-family units designed by real estate developer Joseph Eichler. These units, or “Eichlers” as they have come to be known, incorporate midcentury-modern design elements like open floor plans and floor-to-ceiling glass windows with an appreciation for nature. Indoor-outdoor living is a priority, reflected in the homes’ outdoor atriums and numerous skylights. Although “Eichlers” were intended for mass production, variations in exteriors and layouts kept them from looking identical. The neighborhood was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 28th, 2005. Prices range from $3 million to $5 million, depending on square footage and renovations. In response to some concerns regarding the distinct designs of Eichler houses, Foy had one response. “I always say there are two kinds of people, those who love Eichlers and those who are going to love Eichlers.”Life at the pool
The Greenmeadow Pool and Community Center is the center of the neighborhood – both figuratively and literally. “In the middle of the neighborhood is a swimming pool, clubhouse, and park, all owned by the Greenmeadow Community Association,” says Foy. “You can’t overstate how important it is to the neighborhood as there’s always new ways to bond with people you never would have met.” The swimming pool is available to association members, and hosts swim teams and competitions. Some events include YOGA on Saturday mornings and Tai Chi in the park. Athletic facilities ranging from baseball diamonds to tennis courts can be found north of the neighborhood.Highly-rated Palo Alto public schools
The highly-rated Palo Alto Unified School District serves the area. Younger students may begin their education at Fairmeadow Elementary School, which received an A-plus rating from Niche and was ranked the 9th best public elementary school in the Bay Area. Students may then continue through JLS Middle School and Henry M. Gunn High School, both of which received an A-plus rating from Niche. Henry M. Gunn High School was ranked the 3rd best public high school in all of California by Niche and is a host to Project Lead The Way, an organization promoting STEM-based education. Graduates pursuing higher education while staying close to home may consider Stanford University, just 4 miles away.Greenmeadow Community Association
The Greenmeadow Community Association is incredibly active and hosts events year-round to bring residents together. This includes the 4th of July Parade and Celebration, which has been held every year since 1955 and features floats, races, and a marching band.Transportation throughout the Bay Area
Greenmeadow is very walkable, but those traveling further have a variety of transportation options to explore the Bay Area. “Over the last decade, the neighborhood has become a lot more of a walkable community,” Foy says. The nearby San Antonio Train Station offers commuters a direct rail line into San Jose and San Francisco via the Caltrain Express. Those with a car can use the Bayshore Freeway to reach downtown San Jose, just 15 miles to the West. Residents are also close to San Jose Mineta International Airport, a major Southwest Airlines hub.Shopping and dining nearby
Greenmeadow is entirely residential, yet residents are never far from Palo Alto’s modern amenities. Quick access to groceries and local eateries can be found at the Charleston Center, where Piazza’s Fine Foods serves organic produce and locally sourced products to the community. Residents can grab a bite to eat at Mountain Mike’s Pizza and head to Ricks Ice Cream for dessert. Residents can walk or drive to more extensive shopping and dining opportunities at the San Antonio Center, just two miles away. Chef Chu’s is a local favorite, serving tasty Chinese food and specialty signature dishes.
