Horse farms, scenery and peace in Currentsville
Originally a settlement for formerly enslaved people, Currentsville spans acres of rural bluegrass land that’s home to a mix of equine and cattle farms. On sunny days, it’s common for motorcyclists to go on scenic rides that pass by landmarks like the Historic Colville Covered Bridge, built in the 1870s and one of the few surviving structures of its kind in Kentucky. “It’s very quiet out through there. It’s mostly farms with mostly cattle,” says Ann Cheek, the vice president and barn manager for Our Mims Retirement Haven. “It’s beautiful, of course, and everybody keeps everything really nice and tidy.”

Cuurentsville has ranch-style homes amid spacious farmland
Across this area, yards of fencing border multi-acre properties dotted with homes, farm structures and grazing horses. “It’s so quiet out there, we don’t really see very many people,” Cheek says. “Our neighbors are so far away from each other.” Ranch-style homes and farmhouses make up much of the housing. The community also has a few Colonial Revivals, Cape Cods, Victorian-era cottages and new Traditionals. Homes with the smallest footprints and lot sizes go from about $200,000 to over $400,000. Meanwhile, larger homes on several acres or more may start at about $600,000 and reach $1 million. Currentsville’s CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, well below the national average of 4.

The neighborhood borders Paris’ dining and shopping staples
Paris is the nearest dining and shopping hub, with Cilantro among the closest restaurants to Currentsville. The cozy, laid-back Mexican restaurant is in a small gray brick building with bright yellow trim. “It’s just really, really good,” Cheek says about Cilantro. “It seems a little more authentic than all the other places.” The eatery is a few minutes from Pope Family Farms, a small rustic place selling locally grown produce, homemade breads and other baked treats. Shoppers may walk outside and look at some of the property’s goats and donkeys.
Lil’s Coffee House in Paris’ historic downtown is another institution. “A lot of farm people meet for lunch there,” Cheek says. “They have something different every day, but I really like the taco salad they have.” The city’s Walmart is one of the nearest retailers and grocery stores.

Visiting thoroughbred mares at Our Mims Retirement Haven
Over the years, several former champion thoroughbreds have grazed in the pastures at Our Mims Retirement Haven. The nonprofit farm offers private tours and is named in honor of Our Mims, the late thoroughbred racing mare rescued by the operation’s founder, Jeanne Mirabito. “Jeannie always wanted everybody to have their own personal experience," Cheek says. "You’ll get to meet the mares, give them treats and hear about their stories.”
