Affordable housing just five miles from the beach

Just five miles from Lake Michigan’s beach, Park City offers single-family homes at lower prices than its surrounding communities, and the neighborhood’s parks and restaurants keep residents engaged even when they don’t feel like driving to the beach. The city’s only 40 miles from downtown Chicago, and a Metra station in the neighboring community of Waukegan makes the area popular for commuters. “Park City is a laid-back town and a great place for those looking to buy their first home,” says Mayor Steve Pannell. “The homes here are affordable, and we have lower taxes than in surrounding communities.”

Getting around Park City and to Chicago

Park City is 40 miles north of Chicago, and the drive generally takes about an hour. Alternatively, residents can take the Metra from Waukegan, which is about an hour-and-a-half ride. Residents can take the Pace Bus to get around Park City, but most need cars to run most of their errands. The nearest hospital is less than five miles from Park City, Vista Medical Center East, and when Park City residents travel, they usually fly out of O’Hare, which is 30 miles away.

Local restaurants spotlight Mexican food and barbecue

Mexican food and barbecue are big in Park City, with laidback local restaurants like La Canoa and Big Ed’s BBQ anchoring the city’s culinary scene. Other popular Mexican spots include El Famous Burrito and El Rey Del Pollo Asado, both family-friendly counter-service spots with some of the area’s best food. Late nights and weekends are spent at Anastasia’s Restaurant & Sports Lounge, which serves classic Chicago deep-dish pizza and has a surprisingly extensive breakfast menu, and some spend their free time at the nearby American Place Casino. The neighborhood Walmart is residents’ go-to spot for grocery and retail shopping.

Parks in the city and weekends at the beach

Only five miles away, Waukegan Municipal Beach is a local favorite destination for spending time outside on weekends, but there’s plenty of outdoor space to explore within Park City. Basketball courts and playgrounds at Robert H. Allen Park and Betty Limbrunner Park not only keep residents active but also foster a sense of community. Those particularly interested in the outdoors head south to the Greenbelt Forest Preserve for hiking, biking and fishing, and west to the Lake Carina Forest Preserve for kayaking and canoeing. Nearby, many make use of the public Foss Park Golf Course, which also offers lessons for those looking to improve their game.

Single-family homes in all styles and budgets

Park City housing tends to fall into three categories: manufactured homes; bi-level, tri-level and ranch-style homes; and new traditional-style homes. The neighborhood’s manufactured homes are the area’s most affordable option, with prices ranging from $25,000 to $75,000, and they tend to sit close to their neighbors in manufactured home communities. Bi-level, tri-level and ranch-style homes are the area’s most common architectural style, and prices tend to fall between $100,000 and $300,000. These homes offer larger lots and more privacy, with the neighborhood’s large trees providing both shade and a sense of seclusion. New traditional-style homes also offer larger lots; for these, buyers should expect to spend around $500,000. The median overall price in Park City is about $290,000.
