Quiet agricultural community with views of Mount Hood
Acres of fruit trees make up the agricultural community of Parkdale. Despite its farming roots, the community also has three restaurants, a brewery and a grocery store to which residents from the surrounding region travel. Homes are largely separated by acres of orchards or farmland, but life in Parkdale is anything but isolated. “Being a bartender, I’ve been impressed with the community in Parkdale,” says Richard Gadd, a bartender at Solera Brewery. “They're tighter than Hood River or White Salmon.”

Recreation at the mountain, river and area lakes
Parkdale lies almost squarely between two hotspots for outdoor recreation: the Columbia River, with windsurfing and water sports, and Mount Hood. Views of the mountain serve as the backdrop in Parkdale, with hiking and skiing at Mount Hood Meadows ski resort. About 20 miles west, kayakers and paddleboarders enjoy the tranquil waters of Lost Lake. “There are a couple of lakes. There’s skiing and snowboarding. You can raft and kayak the Hood River,” says Brett Stomps, a realtor with Windermere Real Estate Columbia River Gorge.
Within Parkdale, families can enjoy the shaded green space outside of the Hutson Museum. The land was named a National Historic Site for its Ries-Thompson House—the oldest remaining Parkdale residence, built around 1900. The Parkdale Bicentennial Memorial Garden occupies a small corner of land between Dee Highway and Baseline Drive, where vibrant blooms envelop a small bench and an American flag.

Local family collection becomes Hutson Museum
The Hutson Museum began as a local family’s geology collection in the years following World War II. It has since grown into a public museum that showcases a collection of rocks and minerals—both raw and polished into shapes—as well as mortars, stone bowls, arrowheads and other hunting and fishing tools made by Indigenous peoples.

Northwest-style barbecue, grilled over local cherry wood
Apple Valley BBQ is a vanguard of “Northwest-style” barbecue, with meats smoked over authentic cherry wood sourced from the Hood River Valley. Diners can enjoy pulled pork sandwiches and smoked meatloaf alongside baked mac and cheese topped with shredded pork and pear coleslaw or indulge in a fruit pie from the Apple Valley Country Store, the head chef’s family business. Across the street, Solera Brewery gets its name from the barrels it uses to brew craft beer, though they are traditionally used for sherry, rum and balsamic vinegar. The brewery hosts live music in a converted movie theater with a rotating tap menu, Cuban sandwiches and “adult” grilled cheeses. Locals can stop by Diamond Fruit Growers for fresh produce or McIsaac’s Store, which has a deli counter.
