Residential streets surrounding Parkway Village
A few miles from the heart of Louisville, the Audubon neighborhood offers suburban living at affordable price points compared to surrounding areas. "The tree canopy is amazing, and the landscaping throughout the neighborhood is beautiful," says Deborah Cox, Realtor with RE/MAX 100. "Families move here and rarely want to leave." The Audubon neighborhood encompasses the home rule city of Parkway Village and sits just across Hess Lane from the more affluent city of Audubon Park.
Some streets in the Audubon neighborhood have sidewalks which make for a nice run or even a stroll.

Neighborhood tavern and farm-fresh produce
Tim Tam Tavern, named after a Kentucky Derby-winning thoroughbred, has been a local staple of the neighborhood since 1958. In addition to classic American fare, the restaurant partners with Danny Mac's Pizza, a Louisville classic. Every Tuesday, the bar hosts Music Bingo. Major roads on either side of the neighborhood are lined with more dining options. Locals can sip organic brews at Heine Brothers coffeehouse, and Maya Bagel Express is a locally owned spot known for its New York-style bagels. Parkway Produce is a walk away and has farm-fresh produce in the warmer months. And all year round, locals pick up groceries from the Germantown Kroger, just over a mile away.
Audubon residents fill the Tim Tam Tavern on Tuesday nights.
Burgers and other tavern fare make Tim Tam Tavern a popular eatery in Audubon.

Local magnet elementary
Neighborhood kids are part of the Jefferson County Public School system in the Atherton High Zone. This means that kids are zoned to attend Atherton High School, which gets an A-minus rating from Niche and is the only school in the county that offers an International Baccalaureate (IB) Program. Students are also zoned for Highland Middle School, rated C. Highland is a magnet school for fine arts, especially known for its music program. The JCPS system organizes elementary schools by zone, and parents must submit applications to their chosen school. The Atherton High Zone includes Shelby Traditional Elementary, Bloom Elementary, and Camp Taylor Elementary. However, the magnet Audubon Traditional Elementary is located within the neighborhood, carrying a B-minus rating from Niche. Since the school is walkable, many parents apply.

Red-brick bungalows
The gridded streets of Audubon are populated with red-brick bungalows, ranch homes and Cape Cods from the mid-1900s. Boxy houses with less than 1,000 square feet start around $200,000. Floor plans with 2,500 square feet sit at the higher end, around $350,000. Most homes are right in the middle in terms of pricing and size. Properties usually include a detached garage at the end of a long driveway and a backyard big enough for a small pool. "Generations of families live within blocks of each other," Cox explains. "Residents love it so much that they sometimes move on the same street for a larger or smaller home depending on their needs." For those living in the Parkway Village home rule city, property taxes are paid to the Parkway Village city, not Louisville. The smaller city has its own trash service and regulations on yard maintenance.

Fun over in Fairgrounds
The neighborhood sits adjacent to the Fairgrounds area, home to the annual State Fair, the seasonal Kentucky Kingdom amusement park and Cardinal Stadium. Recently renamed to match its home football team, the Louisville Cardinals, the stadium gets packed for sports games, major concerts and flea markets. Residents of Audubon face a 40-minute walk to get over to this area, but on nice days, it's worth it to avoid the crowds trying to park. In the opposite direction, the Louisville Zoo is just 2 miles away.

The Louisville International Airport is just 2 miles away, keeping a major travel hub well within reach. Residents often hear the sounds of planes flying low over the residential streets, but less so than other neighborhoods that sit even closer. The Audubon Hospital sits along Poplar Level Road, surrounded by several medical facilities. The hospital presents a similar trade-off — appointments and emergency services are a short walk away, but those who live along Poplar should expect some ambulance noise. Other nearby destinations include downtown Louisville, 5 miles north, and The University of Louisville, 2 miles west. The Transit Authority of River City (TARC) public buses crisscross around Audubon, providing access to many nearby destinations.
