Older homes and mountain views define Brigden Ranch
Brigden Ranch, in northeast Pasadena, is a residential neighborhood with views of the San Gabriel Mountains and walkable streets without heavy traffic. Deena Willis, an associate Broker with RE/MAX Properties said, "I would say Brigden Ranch is great – it has older homes built from the 1920s to 1940s. It has a lot of character. Some homes are Spanish, some English, and they have 1940s traditional ranches.” With Old Town Pasadena only about 4 miles away, and downtown Los Angeles within a 20-mile drive, it is also accessible for commuters.
Brigden Ranch has a mix of stucco Spanish Revivals and brick homes
You may choose a ranch with Spanish Revival styling, like a red clay tile roof and stucco outside walls, or a midcentury classic with brick and siding, plus a full wall of front windows with cross-hatches. An example of 1970s architecture puts the garage at the forefront and slanted timbering shades the walkway leading to the door. Home prices in Brigden Ranch generally range from $900,000 to over $1.5 million. And you can get the space you need, whether it be 2-bedroom of less than 1,000 square feet, or a 4-bedroom of over 3,000 square feet. Regardless of the house’s size, mountain-view backdrops are available.
Language immersion programs through Pasadena USD
Children can attend public schools in the Pasadena Unified School District, including Daniel Webster Elementary, offering the first elementary-level Armenian world language program in the district. The opt-in academy prepares students to continue at Armenian programs at the district’s Blair Middle and High. Brigden Ranch’s kindergarteners through 8th graders also may enroll at Eliot Arts Magnet Academy, which is focused on arts-integrated French immersion. And another choice for a mixed-level school is Marshall Fundamental, giving 6th through 12th graders access to the Academy for Creative Industries, with courses like orchestra, stage tech and graphic arts. A purely secondary school, Pasadena High, founded in 1891, is the most populated out of the district’s high schools. In 2021 it was honored as the city’s best public school by the Pasadena Weekly.
Victory Park is a hot spot for community events
When it’s time for outdoor enjoyment, head about a mile southwest to Victory Park. It’s the site of a farmer’s market on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. And don’t miss the annual Family Fun Fall Festival in October. Local community groups take the stage, plus there are costume contests and carnival games for the kids. The Lumina Academy of Dance offers classes in a variety of styles, including Afro Brazilian dance. The Lumina Butterflies were the 2019 winners of Belly Dancers of the Universe.
A few neighborhood businesses, plus more along Washington Boulevard
Within the neighborhood, on Allen Avenue, there’s some shops and businesses. Garo’s Basturma is an Armenian deli named for the cured beef product, using the original owner Garo’s secret recipe. Another longstanding business with Middle Eastern specialties is Old Sasoon Bakery, established in Pasadena in 1986. Try the khacapuri, a Georgian breakfast dish of a runny egg, accompanied by cheeses, all aboard a boat-shaped flatbread. Willis says that the corridor of East Washington Boulevard is a popular nearby shopping area. If you're stopping for a meal, she recommends Domenico's Italian Restaurant. It's "an old family-run business. For Pasadena, Domenico's is a local favorite." Head into this third-generation-owned restaurant for Italian-American classics like ravioli with marinara sauce and chicken parmigiana.
