Just across the Pearl River, minutes from downtown Jackson, the formerly agricultural burg of Pearl now serves as a prime example of a flourishing suburban city. With new developments constantly springing throughout the town, Pearl offers a thoroughly small-town ambiance within a stone's throw of all the employers, shopping and entertainment of bustling Jackson. Most homes in the city were built in the last 30 years, and new housing developments are constantly springing up around the city. Residential blocks are lined with emerald-green lawns—generally well-manicured—and often backed by forests and waterways. Cape Cods and ranch-style homes are common throughout the city, and there are a few neighborhoods around town that offer more spacious new traditional homes. In general, though, properties in Pearl are a little smaller and more wallet-friendly than in neighboring Flowood. "I live probably bird's eye from the airport, and it just doesn't bother us," Ellis notes.
