East Mount Airy

Historic designs and plenty of greenery
Due to East Mount Airy’s size, a variety of home styles fill the area. “That area has lots of older homes with historic architecture, ornamental designs and trees,” says Michelle Magee, a Realtor with Keller Williams who has over eight years of experience. Dutch Colonials, Tudor-style townhouses and stone Queen Anne-style homes sit throughout the neighborhood. From almost $1 million historic farmhouses and Colonial homes to row houses that start at $150,000, future residents have plenty of options. Most land in the $200,000 to $375,000 range and take a little over a month to sell. Homeowners make up most of the neighbors here, but renters settle in complexes like Canterbury Apartments or Willow Bend Apartments. Street parking is a must for most residents, as many homes have stone or concrete steps leading from the front entrances to the sidewalks.Kids start at Eleanor C. Emlen Elementary
There are multiple school options for families, depending on where they live. Some enroll their kids at Eleanor C. Emlen Elementary School, which serves kindergarten through fifth grade and gets a C-plus from Niche. Some might choose Anna B. Day School for kindergarten through eighth grade. Anna B. Day School receives a C-minus. Finally, students transition to Martin Luther King High, earning a D-plus. Magee mentions residents closer to Center City often seek out charter schools, and East Mount Airy parents also have that option with options such as Wissahickon or Excelsior School.Spending the day at Pleasant Playground
Anyone who wants to get out of the house and run around outside can visit Pleasant Playground to play a round of tennis, practice their baseball swing or take a dip in the community pool. Young kids can have an adventure on the nearby playground equipment. The park also features a community garden and indoor activities like food giveaways and a youth opportunity fair. The Awbury Arboretum is full of ways to explore nature, including The Farm at Awbury, where visitors can learn about farming or feed the community of goats. Some might walk along the pond or see the art galleries in the historic Francis Cope House, named for the previous resident who was active in the community in the 19th century. The neighborhood is also home to Lovett Memorial Library, a place for avid readers and students alike. Residents can read in the outdoor courtyard shaded by trees.Shopping and dining down Germantown Avenue
Locals drive down Germantown Avenue to shop or dine out at local destinations. “That street feels like an old town center. They keep the history alive with streetlights that look like gas lamps and the Belgian Block roads,” Magee says. Coffee shops, lunch spots and bakeries line the busy street, but places like McMenamin’s Tavern continue to see crowds come in to try their wings and order a drink at the bar. Mi Puebla Restaurant & Bakery serves authentic Mexican cuisine for lunch and sweet treats. Jansen is a steakhouse popular for its stone Colonial building and romantic atmosphere. But that’s just a taste of the dining options along Germantown Avenue. There are plenty more restaurants waiting to be sampled. When it’s time to stock up on groceries, locals head to ACME Markets. Wawa offers last-minute grocery options and made-to-order fast-food options like sandwiches and breakfast bowls.Neighbors get together for Mt. Airy Day
Mt. Airy Day has been a significant neighborhood event since its origin in the 1970s. Local vendors, artists and sponsors put on the street festival every May to bring the East and West Mount Airy communities together. The 7000 Block of Germantown Avenue turns into party central, with residents enjoying live music, food trucks and the company of their neighbors.Taking the SEPTA train to Center City
Having a personal vehicle is certainly helpful in East Mount Airy, but the neighborhood also has convenient public transit options. Residents have access to SEPTA trains, which connect directly to Center City. The neighborhood is also served by multiple SEPTA bus and trolley lines.Visiting Hare Krishna Temple
There are roughly seven different churches in East Mount Airy, including the Grace Epiphany Episcopal Church, which has stood in the neighborhood since 1889. The Hare Krishna Temple is a Hindu gathering space that sits across Germantown Avenue and offers Sunday evening services.
