Historic charm and proximity to downtown Phoenix in Encanto-Palmcroft
Just north of downtown Phoenix, Encanto-Palmcroft is known for its historic architecture, palm-lined streets and the expansive Encanto Park. The neighborhood offers easy access to shops, restaurants and event spaces and is less than 3 miles from downtown. “Encanto-Palmcroft is one of the top historic districts in Phoenix,” says Sherry Rampy, an Associate Broker with Brokers Hub Realty. “People are really drawn to the area for its suburban feel and proximity to Encanto Park. You’re just a few minutes from downtown, but it feels like you’re miles away. Historically, it has been a popular community among lawyers and government employees because it’s close to the courthouse and city legislative buildings.”
Mediterranean architecture and a diverse housing market
Homes within the Encanto-Palmcroft Historic District date back to before World War II, with Mediterranean architectural influences like tile roofing, stucco facades and arched entryways. Low water-use landscaping is common throughout the area due to Phoenix’s arid climate, and back-yard swimming pools are common. “The neighborhood is unique in that it doesn’t have grid-system streets like the rest of the city,” says Rampy. “Just south of the park, homes sit on curved, oval-like streets with yards shaped like slices of pie. It can make it easier to get lost, but it’s such a beautiful part of town to get lost in.” Ranch-style homes and bungalows with around 2,000 square feet or less range from $190,000 to $640,000, while larger builds with updated interiors can go for $680,000 to $2 million, with prices increasing with lot size and square footage. Two and three-bedroom townhomes on the neighborhood’s west end range from $250,000 to $310,000.
Extracurriculars and career-based learning at Central High School
Phoenix has a public open enrollment school policy, allowing parents to enroll their kids in their school of choice, even if it lies outside of their communities' boundaries. Many locals attend Kenilworth School, which serves kindergarten through eighth-grade students and earns a C overall grade from Niche. Central High School receives a B-minus grade and has over 40 extracurricular offerings, from film club and modern dance to art club and a student-run newspaper. The high school also has a variety of career and technical education courses, including sports medicine, engineering and graphic design.
Endless activities in Encanto Park
Encanto Park encompasses over 220 acres of the community and is one of the largest urban parks in Phoenix. “When my daughter was little, we would walk there all the time,” says Rampy. It’s a great park for families in the area, with kids’ activities and lots of open space. The lagoon is home to a lot of ducks, and you’ll have little families of ducks crossing the street and hanging out in people’s front yards in Encanto-Palmcroft.” The park is complete with sports facilities, a kids' amusement park, a public swimming pool and a lagoon where visitors can rent paddle boats. Anglers can fish the lagoon for trout and catfish. The park is also home to two popular golf courses. Nearby, Margaret T. Hance Park has open field space, paved walking trails and a playground. Additionally, the park is home to the Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix, which has a peaceful coy pond and a tea house.
Access to Phoenix attractions and locally owned eateries
McDowell Road sits just south of Encanto-Palmcroft, lined with an array of local eateries, chains and small businesses. Vovomeena is a local favorite for coffee and brunch, with dishes like Mexican eggs benedict and sweet crepes. A few doors down, Roses by the Stairs Brewing uses locally sourced ingredients to make its brews, with over a dozen craft beers on tap. The brewery hosts a run club each Monday and trivia every Thursday evening, with regular live music. “You’re also just minutes from some of the city’s best museums,” Rampy says. “The Heard Museum, the Phoenix Art Museum and the Phoenix Theater Company are all within walking distance of the neighborhood’s east side.” For groceries, Safeway and Sprouts Farmers Market are both nearby.
Nearby annual events, from a state fair to fall festivities
Every year, the Arizona State Fair is held on the west side of the neighborhood, drawing in over one million visitors each fall. The month-long event has carnival rides, concerts, vendors, agriculture displays, wrestling matches and more. In November, the Enchanted Island Amusement Park hosts the Harvest Festival, complete with a historic hayride, kids’ games and a petting zoo.
Valley Metro transit and access to I-10
Interstate 10 runs just south of Encanto-Palmcroft and leads around 115 miles southeast to Tucson. Valley Metro operates the area’s bus routes, with nearby stops along Seventh Avenue, Thomas Road and McDowell Road. The Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is around 7 miles away.
