Restaurants, art and nightlife are walkable from Midtown Phoenix

Midtown Phoenix is a central pocket of the city situated between Downtown Phoenix's art scene and the trendy boutiques in Uptown Phoenix, which has its own thriving nightlife and culinary identity. Getting around on foot is easy, and a light rail connects the neighborhood to other parts of the city. While there are a few communities of midcentury single-family homes throughout Midtown, many residents live in condos and apartments.

The cost of housing in Midtown

Condos and townhouses with one to two bedrooms in Midtown cost anywhere from the mid $100,000s to the mid $600,000s. Prices largely depend on size, as units range from roughly 700 square feet to over 1,500 square feet. Most communities require monthly homeowners association fees — going from over $200 to under $900 — which go toward maintaining amenities, such as resort-style pools, fitness centers and clubhouses. A few communities on the upper end of the price range are gated and offer concierge service. Single-family homes fetching between the lower $300,000s and the mid $600,000s make up three small pockets of Midtown. Some are in need of a little TLC, while others are updated with recent appliances and modern conveniences.

Types of homes in Midtown

Condos and townhouses in Midtown come in a variety of architectural styles, from kitschy low rises from the 1960s to the newer built Edison Midtown Phase II complex, completed in 2024.

Minimal Traditional and ranch-style homes largely make up the detached, single-family housing stock, though understated midcentury modern designs are also prevalent. Less common are Pueblo and Spanish Revival homes, which tend to fetch a higher sales price than other styles. Most properties were constructed in the 1940s and the 1950s, with small, fenced yards in the back.

Transportation and commuting

Most properties have driveways or carports, though vehicles are often parked along residential streets. Residents can reach downtown — between 3 and 4 miles away — in about 15 minutes. Before they reach the center of the city, they will pass over Interstate 10, which leads in and out of Phoenix. “There’s quite a bit of on-street, meter parking,” says Nancy Cotton, an associate broker with Fathom Realty Elite and co-owner of The Cotton Team. “Some restaurants have small lots or valet parking.”

Five different Valley Metro bus lines stop along Midtown’s larger thoroughfares. The Valley Metro Rail B Line runs along Central Avenue through Midtown, passing downtown Phoenix on its way from South Mountain to North Mountain Village . In terms of employers, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center is at the corner of Thomas Road and 7th Avenue in the neighborhood, and a few office buildings are scattered throughout Midtown as well.

Walkability and bike lanes

Bike paths are designated along the right side of some larger thoroughfares, and most streets have sidewalks, meaning trips to a favorite coffee shop or a quick grocery run are possible on foot. Residents can reach one end of the neighborhood from the other in about 40 minutes on foot, passing numerous eateries and other amenities along the way.

Things to do in Midtown Phoenix

There’s plenty to do — often within walking distance — around Midtown Phoenix. “There’s culture, there’s art, there’s theater.” Cotton says. “It offers something for everybody.” A variety of trendy restaurants are scattered throughout the neighborhood, many lining Central Avenue:

  • BoSa Donuts, which also serves coffee, smoothies and boba tea
  • Alexi’s Grill, a family-owned Italian restaurant
  • Zipps Sports Grill, where you can catch the game or play a round of pool
  • Kobalt Bar, a cocktail lounge that hosts drag shows, karaoke and trivia nights
  • Ocotillo Restaurant, which offers an upscale New American menu in a modern space
  • Taco Guild, which serves Mexican fare in a former church
Art enthusiasts can head to Downtown Phoenix to experience the Phoenix Art Museum — the largest art museum in the Southwest — or the Heard Museum, dedicated to American Indian art that ranges from traditional to contemporary pieces.

Midtown's outdoor amenities

Those looking to spend some time outdoors can venture to Uptown Phoenix for Steele Indian School Park, which has athletic courts, a dog park and a playground. Its amphitheater hosts various events and backs up to a fishing pond, where anglers wait for catfish, trout, bass and sunfish. Across 7th Street in Central City, the Phoenix Country Club’s 18-hole golf course is home to the Phoenix Open and the PGA TOUR Championships.

Public schools and education options

Children who live on the west side of 3rd Street may begin their PK-3 education at Encanto Elementary School before attending Clarendon Elementary School for grades four through six. Those on the other side of 3rd Street may begin their public school journeys at Longview Elementary School, which serves PK-6. Students from both elementary school pipelines come together at Osborn Middle School and Central High School. High school students can also apply to the Phoenix Coding Academy, part of the city's public school system, which offers project-based learning, a nationally recognized apprenticeship program, job shadowing opportunities and workshops.
