North Encanto is a centrally located swath of Phoenix
North Encanto encompasses a wide-ranging area smack dab in the middle of Phoenix’s largest city. Located just off Interstate 17, this neighborhood is packed with ranch- and bungalow-style homes that have been here for decades, all close to a wide selection of stores, restaurants and other attractions. It’s the type of area where some put down roots. “It has just stood the test of time,” says Andrea Crouch, who is the owner and team lead of The Crouch Group with eXp Realty and has 20 years of real estate experience. “People want to live in that area, forever. They stay there, they have their kids move in there. The kids who grew up in the area want to come back and buy in the area. So it truly is a unique little area in the Valley.”
Housing balances original character with modern touches
The North Encanto area is made up mostly of residential streets lined neatly with similarly styled homes built between 1940 and 1960. Options average almost 2,000 square feet and feature brick and stucco exteriors. Crouch says there are quite a few original owners who still live in the neighborhood, in addition to young families. “I recently sold one where the home was built in 1941, and [the owners] were original,” Crouch says. “And they had not done a ton of current, modern updates, so it still had that really original feel and that historic charm. But then some have been completely redone and gutted inside and made more modern.” Single-family homes sell for $280,000 to $730,000 based on square footage and condition. The neighborhood also has some condos and townhome-style properties for $130,000 to $220,000. According to FirstStreet.org, the neighborhood faces an extreme heat risk.
Restaurants and shops line major roads in and around North Encanto
Thoroughfares like 19th Avenue, 15th Avenue and Indian School Road offer an array of restaurants and other businesses just outside North Encanto’s residential corridors. Options include the relatively new One Love Cafe, which opened in 2024 and has popular oxtails. Also, Original Hamburger Works, which dates back to 1967 and is a draw not just for burgers but also for its wings. “If you are in that area, you got to go there,” Crouch says. My Mother's Restaurant is known for its homestyle dishes, like prime rib and meatloaf. The restaurant is right around the corner from a Food City grocery store. Other stores in the area include Vintage New Skool, a vintage clothing store, and Landis Cyclery, a locally owned bike shop in operation since 1912.
Nearby amusement park is a community gathering spot
North Encanto is just outside the massive Encanto Park, which houses Enchanted Island Amusement Park. Enchanted Island has all sorts of rides and a snack bar, but it also hosts community events. The Harvest Festival in late November is among them, a two-day affair with hay rides, a petting zoo and pumpkin bowling. The park also puts on a Winter Wonderland Express event in mid-December with sled rides, bounce houses, fire pits and opportunities to visit with Santa.
Area schools offer dual language and STEM instruction
Osborn School District No. 8 and the Phoenix Union High School District serve students in North Encanto and carry C and C-plus grades from Niche, respectively. Both districts offer open enrollment, magnet programs and out-of-district transfers, all subject to space availability. North Encanto is zoned for the B-minus-rated Metro Tech High in the Phoenix Union High School District, where students have career and technical education opportunities in topics such as automotive technology, culinary arts and sports medicine. The Phoenix Christian Preparatory School is a private option in the area with an A-minus rating and prekindergarten through 12th grade, where students can take electives in robotics, coding and forensic science. North Encanto is also close to Phoenix College, a community college offering 150 degree and certificate programs.

All the things right here,” Crouch says. “Enchanted Island, I went there as a kid and that was huge. So it has stood the test of time.” Enchanted Island offers rides ranging from a carousel to a parachute tower.
Center of the city is a relatively quick commute
Though I-17 runs parallel to the neighborhood, residents don’t have to hop on the highway to reach downtown. The core of the city is approximately 4 miles away, accessible via thoroughfares such as McDowell Road and Central Avenue. Commuters also have access to several Valley Metro bus stops in and around the neighborhood, and the Valley Metro Rail runs along Central Avenue.
